The Mzabites have protected and preserved their traditional lifestyle since the 11th century. Despite the harsh desert surroundings, they have ingeniously rationed water to sustain a large date palm plantation and lush gardens. The villages not only produce dates but also a variety of handicrafts that provide income. Their architecture reflects simplicity, practicality, and adaptation to the environment, with each community centered around a mosque that doubles as a citadel, and houses laid out in concentric rings encircled by protective walls.
