Ancient worlds. Beautiful landscapes. A journey with a sense of place.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
From the Mediterranean to the Saharan oases, this twelve-day journey follows a richly varied route through Algeria. Algiers provides the opening chapter, before Djemila, Constantine and Timgad reveal ancient cities and dramatic northern landscapes. The road then turns south through Ghoufi Canyon and Touggourt towards the M’Zab Valley.
Two nights around Ghardaia allow time to appreciate its settlements and palm groves before the long desert road to Timimoun. Here, red architecture and the Grand Erg Occidental bring a different atmosphere to the journey, before a flight returns to Algiers. Accommodation follows the route’s character, including an oasis guesthouse example rather than a uniform promise of resort-style facilities.

Your complete 12-day journey
DAY 01
The Mediterranean Welcome
Arrive in Algiers, where the Mediterranean provides a luminous introduction to Algeria. This first evening is reserved for settling into the capital and preparing for the journey ahead, rather than a full sightseeing programme. Let the change of pace begin with a quiet moment at the hotel and a first impression of the city around you. Over the coming days, coastal streets will give way to mountain ruins, dramatic bridges and desert settlements. Tonight, the pleasure lies in anticipation: Algeria is about to reveal itself one landscape at a time.
OVERNIGHT · Algiers
Algiers — Mediterranean waterfront
DAY 02
Behind the White Walls
Enter the Casbah and allow its narrow passages to set the rhythm of the morning. Walking here is about noticing scale: a doorway, a bend in a lane, the relationship between a home and the street outside. Later, the Martyrs’ Monument and National Museum of El Mujahid introduce the country’s struggle for independence. These visits place the capital within a much wider national story. Return to your hotel with a richer understanding of Algiers, where the intimacy of an old neighbourhood sits alongside the public spaces of a modern capital.
OVERNIGHT · Algiers
Algiers — an Ottoman courtyard
DAY 03
Stone Streets, Mountain Horizons
Travel east to Djemila before continuing to Constantine. At the archaeological site and its museum, take time to look beyond individual monuments and imagine how an entire city once worked. Streets, civic spaces and mosaics reveal different aspects of everyday life, from public ceremony to private interiors. The onward journey changes the scene dramatically as Constantine comes into view. Its extraordinary setting becomes the next chapter of the trip, replacing the open spaces of the ruins with an urban landscape shaped by ravines. The day includes approximately five hours of driving.
OVERNIGHT · Constantine
Djemila — monumental Roman arch
DAY 04
A City Suspended Above the Gorge
Begin with an excursion to Tiddis, where the hillside setting makes the relationship between architecture and terrain especially clear. Return to Constantine for a closer encounter with the city itself. The museum, Ahmed Bey Palace, Abdul Khader Mosque, market and bridges introduce several distinct layers of local life and history. Move between interiors and broad views, allowing each to provide a different perspective on the same place. By evening, Constantine feels less like a striking photograph and more like a living city whose geography influences every part of its character.
OVERNIGHT · Constantine
Constantine — city above the ravine
DAY 05
An Empire Written in Stone
Leave Constantine for Medracen and the Roman remains of Timgad. The contrast between the mausoleum and the planned streets of the archaeological site gives today its particular interest. At Timgad, look along the surviving lines of the town and consider the relationship between movement, gathering places and buildings. Wide views help explain the overall design, while closer observation brings out individual details. This is a day for an unhurried encounter with the past rather than a hurried collection of monuments. Allow approximately three hours of driving before your overnight stay near the ruins.
OVERNIGHT · Timgad
Timgad — the ancient Roman city
DAY 06
Through the Canyon to the Oasis
The road leads south across the Saharan Atlas, with Ghoufi Canyon providing a memorable interruption to the journey. Here, landscape and habitation can be considered together: pause to appreciate the setting of the old dwellings and the oasis below. Continue towards Touggourt as the scenery becomes increasingly desert in character. The journey itself is an important part of today’s experience, making the transition from northern Algeria to its oasis country tangible. Driving takes approximately six hours, and tonight’s accommodation is a straightforward local hotel, chosen as a practical stop along this route.
OVERNIGHT · Touggourt
Ghoufi Canyon — the Saharan Atlas
DAY 07
Into the M’Zab Valley
Continue to Ghardaia, entering the M’Zab Valley after a morning journey of about four hours. The settlements here call for a different kind of attention from the monumental ruins visited earlier. Observe how homes, lanes and religious buildings relate to one another, and how the whole settlement occupies its landscape. Exploration across today and tomorrow includes Beni Isguen, Al Ateuf, local markets and palm groves. Your base may be in Ghardaia itself or a guesthouse among the Beni Isguen palms, depending on availability. Both keep the valley at the centre of the experience.
OVERNIGHT · Ghardaia
Ghardaia — the M’Zab Valley
DAY 08
Courtyards, Palms and Living Traditions
Spend a second day in the M’Zab Valley, allowing time for its architecture and daily rhythms to become more familiar. Continue exploring the settlements and palm groves introduced on arrival, with attention to the relationship between community, water and the desert environment. This is an opportunity to look carefully rather than simply cover distance: the shape of a lane or the arrangement of a courtyard can be as revealing as a panoramic view. Return to your valley accommodation with a deeper appreciation of a place whose interest lies in the whole inhabited landscape.
OVERNIGHT · Ghardaia
M’Zab Valley — traditional lanes
DAY 09
The Road to the Red Oasis
Set out early for Timimoun, a substantial overland journey of approximately 620 kilometres. Today should be approached as a travel day with its own rewards: changing light, long horizons and the gradual appearance of a new desert landscape. Keep the camera close, but also allow yourself time simply to watch the country unfold beyond the window. Arrival brings the distinctive colours of the oasis town and the prospect of a fuller exploration tomorrow. Settle into your hotel and let the evening provide a welcome pause after the longest road stage of this itinerary.
OVERNIGHT · Timimoun
Timimoun — the oasis palm grove
DAY 10
Among the Dunes of the Grand Erg
Explore Timimoun and its surrounding desert country. Subject to local conditions, the programme includes red caves, Tindjillet, Ouled Aissa, palm groves and remnants of Berber settlements, alongside the dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental. The irrigation traditions offer a useful counterpoint to the apparent emptiness of the desert, revealing how people have sustained life here. There is also time to appreciate Timimoun’s old quarters, market and handicraft shops. Let the day alternate between wide landscapes and close detail, with neither hurried: the oasis is most compelling when both are seen together.
OVERNIGHT · Timimoun
Grand Erg Occidental — Saharan dunes
DAY 11
A Last Evening in Algiers
Fly from Timimoun back to Algiers, completing the return north by air. The flight schedule determines whether free time falls in the oasis before departure or in the capital after arrival, so this day deliberately leaves room for those practical arrangements. Take the opportunity to revisit the journey in your mind: Roman streets, ravines, palm groves and the colours of the desert now form a connected story. This evening, a final dinner in Algiers offers a fitting conclusion to the experience before settling into the hotel for your last night.
OVERNIGHT · Algiers
Algiers — whitewashed architecture
DAY 12
Farewell to Algeria
Your journey ends in Algiers today. After breakfast, prepare for departure in accordance with your flight arrangements. If the schedule permits, there may be a little independent time before leaving, but no additional excursion is assumed within this final day. Keep the morning comfortable and unhurried, allowing space to pack and make the transition home. The route has brought together Algeria’s Mediterranean capital, its ancient cities and its desert communities; departure leaves you with an appreciation of their differences and of the landscapes that connect them across this remarkable country.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
Choose the right time for your journey.
Recommended months: April and October; March and November are cooler alternatives
Typical night temperatures: 9–15°C; cooler on higher ground
April and October offer the best balance for this journey between the Mediterranean coast, inland heritage towns and the Sahara’s edge. Coastal afternoons are typically around 21–26°C, while Ghardaïa reaches about 26–27°C; nights generally fall to 9–15°C, with cooler evenings on higher ground.
