Ancient worlds. Beautiful landscapes. A journey with a sense of place.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
A journey through northern Algeria, timed around the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027. Begin in Algiers, continue through Djemila and Constantine, then fly west to Oran for the celestial event and an exploration of the surrounding region. Ancient sites, palace interiors and Mediterranean views give the experience depth beyond the eclipse itself.
The nine-day sequence also includes Tiddis, Tlemcen, Tipasa and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania. Three nights in Oran provide the base for the western chapter, with a room at the Royal Hotel illustrated as an accommodation example. This is a date-specific programme: the eclipse sits on Day 7, corresponding to a 27 July–4 August 2027 journey.

DAY BY DAY
Your complete 9-day journey
DAY 01
An Evening on the Mediterranean
Arrive in Algiers for the beginning of this special journey through northern Algeria. The programme opens in the evening, leaving the first day focused on arrival and settling into the hotel rather than scheduled sightseeing. Take a moment to adjust to your surroundings and prepare for the experiences ahead. Over the next week, the route connects the capital with ancient cities, dramatic gorges and the western Mediterranean coast. Its defining event is the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027, but the journey around that moment has a character entirely its own.
OVERNIGHT · Algiers
Algiers — city and bay
DAY 02
The Capital, Layer by Layer
Explore Algiers through the contrasting experiences of the Kasbah, the Martyrs’ Monument and the National Museum of El Mujahid. In the old quarter, pay attention to the human scale of streets and houses, with each turning offering a different perspective. The later visits introduce a more recent chapter of national history and help place the city within the story of modern Algeria. Allow the day to unfold through observation and conversation, moving between intimate urban spaces and monumental ones. Return to the hotel with the capital beginning to feel familiar.

DAY 03
Mosaics on the Road to Constantine
Travel from Algiers to Djemila, where the archaeological site and museum form the principal focus of the day. Rather than looking only for individual highlights, follow the relationships between streets, public buildings and the objects preserved indoors. The mosaics bring another dimension to the visit, inviting close attention after the broader views outside. Continue to Constantine, where the setting changes from an ancient city in open country to a living city above deep ravines. With approximately five hours of driving, this is a full travelling day that rewards a comfortable, steady pace.
OVERNIGHT · Constantine
Djemila — Roman heritage
DAY 04
Bridges and Hillside Ruins
Visit Tiddis before returning to Constantine for a closer exploration of the city. The hillside ruins provide an opportunity to think about how a settlement adapts to its terrain, a theme that continues among Constantine’s bridges and ravines. The city programme encompasses the museum, Ahmed Bey Palace, Abdul Khader Mosque and the market. These encounters balance imposing views with quieter details, from architectural interiors to the movement of everyday streets. By the end of the day, the dramatic landscape has become the setting for a much fuller portrait of Constantine.
OVERNIGHT · Constantine
Constantine — suspension bridge and gorge
DAY 05
Westward to Oran
Fly west from Constantine to Oran, exchanging the inland city for the Mediterranean coast. Across your stay, sightseeing introduces Santa Cruz Fortress, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Bey’s Palace, Place du 1er Novembre and the former home of Yves Saint Laurent. The order of these visits is shared between today and the time following the eclipse, according to local arrangements. Allow the arrival in Oran to establish a new atmosphere: seafront light, broad urban views and streets that reveal another side of Algeria’s history. Settle into your hotel for three nights.
OVERNIGHT · Oran
Oran — Santa Cruz above the bay
DAY 06
Tlemcen’s Courtyards and Monuments
Make a day excursion to Tlemcen, approximately two and a half hours from Oran. The programme brings together the Mechouar complex, Sidi Bel Hassan Mosque, the Great Mosque, the remains of Mansourah and the Sidi Boumediene Mausoleum. Look for connections between ornament, scale and setting as you move between these places, rather than treating each as an isolated stop. Return to Oran during the afternoon. If you wish, independent time can include a walk along the Corniche, providing a gentle coastal conclusion to a day focused on the architecture of the interior.

DAY 07
The Day the Sky Changes
On 2 August 2027, the total solar eclipse becomes the focus of the morning in the Oran area. The viewing arrangements determine the exact position and timing on the day; clear skies and a particular duration of totality cannot be promised. Use appropriate eclipse eye protection as directed, and allow yourself time to experience the changing light as well as photograph it. Afterwards, continue the Oran sightseeing programme, completing further city visits from the planned selection. This evening offers a chance to reflect on an unusual meeting of landscape, history and astronomy.

DAY 08
Ancient Shores, A Final Capital Evening
Depart Oran and travel towards Tipasa, where the archaeological remains stand beside the Mediterranean. The visit offers a final opportunity to consider the ancient world in a different setting from Djemila and Tiddis. Continue to the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania before reaching Algiers. The combination of coastline, ruins and a monumental tomb gives the return journey its own identity, rather than simply retracing the route. Allow approximately five hours of driving across the day. A final dinner in the capital brings the journey to a close before your last overnight stay.
OVERNIGHT · Algiers

DAY 09
Departure from Algiers
The programme concludes after breakfast in Algiers. Prepare for your onward flight, with any remaining independent time dependent on the departure schedule. No additional guided excursion is assumed this morning, allowing practical arrangements to take priority and the journey to end without unnecessary haste. The memories span more than the eclipse itself: the old capital, mosaic-filled galleries, Constantine’s unusual setting and the western coast each contributed to the experience. Leave with those places connected in your mind, and with one exceptional morning in Oran providing the journey’s unmistakable centrepiece.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
Choose the right time for your journey.
Recommended months: Late July–early August 2027; eclipse on 2 August
Typical daytime temperatures: Coast around 30–33°C; hotter inland
Typical night temperatures: Around 19–23°C along the coast
This special journey must run in late July and early August 2027 to include the total solar eclipse on 2 August. It is a summer departure, rather than Algeria’s mildest sightseeing season. Expect coastal daytime temperatures around 30–33°C and nights near 19–23°C; inland archaeological sites can be hotter, and heatwaves are possible. Early sightseeing, sun protection and regular shaded breaks are advisable. April and October suit a cooler cultural tour, but cannot include this eclipse.
Temperatures are approximate seasonal averages, not a forecast. Final dates, access and local arrangements are confirmed before booking.
