Landscapes, living traditions and carefully arranged encounters.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
Sixteen days bring together the Wodaabe Gerewol gathering in Chad and the royal, forest and coastal landscapes of Cameroon. The combined route travels from N’Djamena and Durbali to Douala, the western highlands, Yaoundé and Kribi.
After the festival, spend a night back in N’Djamena before the early flight to Douala and the Cameroon programme. Festival timing remains community-led, and the connecting flight must be coordinated with the touring arrangements. Camping in Chad and hotel stays in Cameroon are distinct parts of the experience, rather than a continuous luxury-resort journey.

DAY 01
N’Djamena — Arrival in Chad
Arrive at N’Djamena International Airport and meet your local representative for the transfer to your hotel. The first day is reserved for settling in after the flight, with the capital’s sightseeing planned for tomorrow. Your journey focuses on the Gerewol gathering in the Durbali region, offering extended time alongside Wodaabe communities rather than a circuit through the northern desert. Rest at the hotel and prepare for the expedition’s simpler camping arrangements. Your guide will explain the practical details of the coming days and the flexible nature of the festival programme.
OVERNIGHT · N’Djamena
DAY 02
N’Djamena — Markets and the Chari River City
Explore N’Djamena, the capital on the Chari River facing Cameroon. Visit the central market and National Museum, then see the city’s mosques, including the Grand Mosque, with the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace included where time and access allow. The day introduces the capital’s mixture of communities and its everyday commercial life before the journey moves into a very different rural setting. Return to your hotel for dinner and another comfortable night in the city, preparing for the travel and camping days associated with the Gerewol gathering.
OVERNIGHT · N’Djamena
N’Djamena and the Grand Mosque
DAY 03
Towards the Wodaabe Gathering
Leave N’Djamena and begin the journey towards the Wodaabe gathering in the Durbali region. The community’s location varies with seasonal conditions, so the journey allows two days for travel and establishing the camp. Follow the local team’s arrangements rather than a fixed sightseeing timetable. As you move away from the capital, the emphasis shifts to the practical rhythm of an expedition and the landscape through which the community travels. Overnight arrangements follow progress towards the gathering, with camping forming part of this stage of the journey.
OVERNIGHT · Durbali region — camping
DAY 04
Settling into the Festival Camp
Continue the approach to the Wodaabe gathering and settle into the camp as local conditions permit. This second day allows time to complete the approach and establish camp, with the exact pace determined by the location of the gathering. Your guides help introduce the setting and explain how to observe daily life respectfully. The community follows a mobile pastoral way of life, and the location of the gathering is not fixed from year to year. Spend the night camping, ready for the extended festival period that follows.
OVERNIGHT · Durbali region — camping

DAY 05
Gerewol — Entering the Celebration
Begin the extended stay with the Wodaabe community during the Gerewol gathering. The next four days form a flexible festival period, so activities follow the community’s own timing rather than a guaranteed daily order. Observe preparations, elaborate personal adornment and the singing and dancing associated with the celebration when they take place. Your local guides help interpret the setting and advise on respectful photography and interaction. Return to the camp for the night, with time across the coming days to appreciate the gathering beyond a brief visit.
OVERNIGHT · Durbali region — camping

DAY 06
Gerewol — Time with the Community
Remain at the gathering, allowing another day for the unfolding celebrations and the ordinary moments around them. Singing, dance and careful preparation are part of the shared festival programme, but their timing is determined locally. Rather than moving to another destination, this extended stay gives you time to observe the relationships between pastoral life, personal presentation and community traditions. Your guide helps you understand what is taking place and where visitors are welcome. Meals and the overnight stay are at camp, maintaining the expedition’s close connection with its rural setting.
OVERNIGHT · Durbali region — camping
DAY 07
Gerewol — Colour, Song and Tradition
Continue the festival stay in the Durbali region, following the same flexible programme described for the four-day celebration period. The emphasis remains on observing the Wodaabe gathering with patience, allowing time for preparations and performances as they occur. Notice the attention given to clothing, jewellery and facial decoration, while your guide explains the cultural context without assigning a separate event to this particular day. The extended visit is intended to offer more than a passing encounter. Return to your tent for another night at the expedition camp.
OVERNIGHT · Durbali region — camping
DAY 08
A Final Day at the Gerewol Gathering
Spend the final full day of the festival block alongside the Wodaabe community, following the local team’s guidance and the gathering’s actual rhythm. The day continues the period of observation, celebration and camp life, with any ceremonies following the community’s wishes rather than a fixed closing event. Take time to reflect on the customs encountered and the importance of approaching them with respect. This evening is your last night camping in the Durbali region before returning to N’Djamena tomorrow for the concluding arrangements of the Chad journey.

DAY 09
Return to N’Djamena — Between Two Countries
After breakfast, leave the Durbali region and return to N’Djamena. Transfer to your hotel for rest after the camping days and prepare for the Cameroon section of the journey. Spend the night in the capital before an early flight to Douala the following morning. The evening is kept unhurried so you can organise your luggage and prepare for the next stage. Your local team coordinates the onward arrangements, while the hotel offers a welcome pause between the festival experience and the next country’s cultural visits.
OVERNIGHT · N’Djamena
DAY 10
Douala — River Traditions and Djebale Island
Fly early from N’Djamena to Douala and meet the Cameroon team. After the hotel transfer, join the city programme: Youpwe fish market, Maritime Museum, King’s Bell Palace and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, followed by the Wouri River canoe trip to Djebale Island. The transfer and touring share the same day, so the confirmed flight schedule determines the timing of the visits. Djebale introduces traditions associated with Ngondo, without promising festival attendance. Return to the hotel for dinner after the transition from Chad to Cameroon.
OVERNIGHT · Douala
DAY 11
Ekom Falls and the Kingdom of Bapa
Leave Douala and travel towards the western highlands, stopping at Ekom Falls amid forest scenery. Continue into the cultural landscape of the Bamileke communities and visit the Kingdom of Bapa, including its royal palace and museum. A meeting with the village chief may be possible, depending on local arrangements. The route combines a dramatic natural setting with an introduction to the institutions and traditions of the region’s chiefdoms. Continue to Bafoussam and check into your hotel, where the evening offers time to rest after this substantial overland travel day.
OVERNIGHT · Bafoussam
Ekom Falls in Cameroon’s forested highlands
DAY 12
Foumban — Royal Heritage and Waterfalls
Travel to Foumban, a centre of Bamoun culture, to visit the Royal Palace and learn about the sultanate’s history. Continue to the Museum of the Bamoun Sultanate, whose architecture reflects royal symbols, and enjoy the programme’s Bamoun dance presentation. Explore the Sultanate Market and artisans’ quarter, where local craftsmanship adds another dimension to the day. On the return journey, stop at Métché Falls before reaching Bafoussam. The combination of royal collections, performance, markets and landscape creates a varied day rooted in the cultural traditions of Cameroon’s western highlands.

DAY 13
Batoufam — A Living Palace, Then Yaoundé
Depart Bafoussam for Batoufam, visiting its Royal Palace and living museum to learn about the community’s history and traditions. Continue towards Yaoundé, with opportunities to notice the changing scenery along the road and make practical stops during the journey. The road journey links the western chiefdoms with Cameroon’s capital, allowing time for practical stops and the changing landscapes along the way. Arrive at your hotel for dinner and the night. This evening provides a pause between the highland visits and the following day’s journey towards the forest communities around Abong Mbang.
OVERNIGHT · Yaoundé
Cameroon — traditional ceremonial dress
DAY 14
Forest Encounters near Abong Mbang
Begin with a short introduction to Yaoundé before travelling towards Abong Mbang. Visit a forest community in the area, where the local guides introduce aspects of daily life and cultural traditions. The programme includes time with residents and the opportunity to see a dance presentation, with encounters guided by the community’s wishes and local arrangements. Afterwards, continue to Bagofit and settle into your hotel for dinner. The emphasis is on respectful exchange and understanding the setting, with time to listen, observe and appreciate the community’s relationship with its surroundings.
OVERNIGHT · Bagofit
DAY 15
From the Interior to the Atlantic
Leave Bagofit and return through Yaoundé, stopping for lunch before continuing towards Kribi on the Gulf of Guinea. This is the longest road journey in the Cameroon section, with approximately eight and a half hours of driving. The landscape gradually changes as you approach the coast, where your hotel provides a different setting after the inland cultural visits. Arrive, check in and enjoy dinner. The programme leaves the remaining time relaxed, allowing the shoreline atmosphere to become part of the journey without adding another scheduled outing.
OVERNIGHT · Kribi

DAY 16
Lobé Falls and a Coastal Farewell
Enjoy breakfast and a relaxed morning in Kribi, with time by the coast before visiting Lobé Falls. Afterwards, have a fish and prawn lunch near the beach, then drive to Douala in the afternoon. A hotel stop provides an opportunity to rest and have dinner before the evening airport transfer. This final day brings together the coastal setting and the practical arrangements for departure, completing the route through Douala, the western kingdoms, Yaoundé, forest communities and Kribi. Your onward flight arrangements are coordinated with the final travel schedule.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
Choose the right time for your journey.
Recommended months: October — Gerewol festival journey
Typical daytime temperatures: N’Djamena around 36°C; Yaoundé around 28°C
Typical night temperatures: N’Djamena around 21°C; Yaoundé around 19°C
October is the travel window for this combined journey because the Chad section follows the Gerewol celebrations. Expect hot conditions around N’Djamena, with typical days near 36°C and nights near 21°C. Yaoundé is milder, around 28°C by day and 19°C overnight; Bafoussam’s higher elevation can feel cooler, while Douala and Kribi are warmer and humid. Cameroon can receive substantial October rain.
