Tusheti paths, Georgian tables and the mountains of Kazbegi
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
Walk from village to village through Tusheti, where towers, slate roofs and pasture sit beneath the Caucasus skyline. The route begins with Tbilisi and Mtskheta before entering the mountains by four-wheel-drive vehicle. Guesthouse dinners, a dumpling lesson and local home visits make the cultural encounters part of the journey rather than brief stops between viewpoints.
After the Tusheti trails, descend to Kakheti for wine tasting and continue through Tbilisi to Kazbegi. Gergeti and the Chaukhi Mountains provide the final walking contrast. This is an active eleven-day programme with several long or steep days, simple shared-facility guesthouses in the highlands and a more comfortable mountain-hotel finish. Summer access to the highlands shapes the operating season.

DAY 01
Tbilisi, Then the Ancient Capital
Arrive in Tbilisi and transfer to Vinotel, with the arrival room arranged to accommodate the early flights described in the programme. Rest through the morning and early afternoon before the orientation gathering. Later, travel to Mtskheta to visit Jvari Church and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, introducing Georgia’s religious architecture before the mountain days begin. A welcome dinner overlooking the Mtkvari River brings the day to a sociable close. The schedule deliberately balances arrival recovery with a first cultural outing, rather than beginning immediately with an extended city walk after the flight.

DAY 02
Balconies, Markets and Georgian Voices
Explore Tbilisi on foot, taking in Narikala Fortress, Sameba Cathedral, the Dry Bridge market and Rustaveli Avenue. Balconies, steep lanes and changing architectural styles make the walk a useful introduction to the capital’s character. After lunch, enjoy a free afternoon; the Georgian National Museum is a suggested independent option rather than an additional compulsory visit. Dinner takes place at Tsiskvili, the restaurant named for its former mill setting, with Georgian folk singing and dancing. Return to Vinotel for a second night before the journey turns towards the highlands.

DAY 03
Into the Tusheti Highlands
Leave Tbilisi for the Tusheti mountains, stopping in Kakheti for a welcoming home lunch. Continue by four-wheel-drive vehicle to Shenako, where stone buildings and open pasture introduce a different pace of life. The drive takes around six hours overall, with mountain-road conditions influencing progress. Settle into a family guesthouse with shared bathroom facilities and enjoy dinner with your hosts. This section values its village setting and hospitality over hotel amenities; it is an integral part of the walking journey, not a conventional luxury resort stay.

DAY 04
Shenako Trails and a Tushetian Table
Begin at the visitor centre to learn about Tusheti’s wildlife and landscape, then follow the scheduled Shenako-area hike. Allow approximately five to six hours for the day’s walking, with lunch at the guesthouse and a vehicle return as arranged locally. An additional evening walk to Aguerta, among ruins and pine woodland, remains optional. Back at the guesthouse, discover how Georgian dumplings are prepared before a traditional supra. The toastmaster guides the meal’s rhythm, giving the evening a cultural shape beyond dinner alone. Stay another night in Shenako’s simple village accommodation.

DAY 05
Across Sanare Pass to Dartlo
After a short transfer, climb past shepherds’ huts to Sanare Pass, then descend towards the Pirikity River and continue to Chigo. Following a picnic lunch, walk onwards to Dartlo, where slate-roofed houses and defensive towers rise above the valley. This is a demanding day: approximately ten miles and seven hours, with substantial descent as well as climbing. The alternative is a drive to Dartlo and a shorter local loop including Kavalo. Both options finish at the riverside guesthouse, where shared facilities and a village setting continue the Tusheti experience.
OVERNIGHT · Dartlo
DAY 06
Nakaicho Ridge and the Road to Omalo
A short drive brings you to the trail for Nakaicho Ridge, where the Tusheti, Pirikity and Gometsari valleys spread below the high ground. Climb steadily, allowing time for the changing perspectives and seasonal flowers along the route. Pass Bochoma and stop at a local home for tea or coffee before the onward drive to Omalo. The full walking day covers around seven to eight miles in approximately six hours, including the ascent to the ridge. Settle into Hotel Samzeo and finish with a Tushetian dinner after the day outdoors.
OVERNIGHT · Omalo
DAY 07
Pine Forests and a Shepherd’s View
Drive briefly to the trailhead and begin the steep climb through pine forest towards a shepherds’ hut. Lunch here comes with broad views across Tusheti when the weather is clear. Descend to Khiso, where you can continue walking or take the vehicle to Shtrolta. The walking route beyond Khiso follows either forest or small villages, depending on conditions. Tea, coffee and snacks at a local home provide a welcoming pause before returning to Omalo. The complete outing takes roughly six to seven hours, with the shorter option preserving flexibility.

DAY 08
Kakheti and the Clay Vessel Tradition
Descend from Tusheti into Kakheti, exchanging the highland trails for vineyards and a slower afternoon devoted to Georgian wine. The guided tasting includes qvevri wines, made using large clay vessels placed in the ground, and introduces the relationship between grape varieties, technique and local food. There is time to appreciate the change of landscape after several active mountain days. Continue to Chateau Ikalto for dinner and the overnight stay. The quieter pace offers a welcome interval between the Tusheti walks and the Kazbegi mountains still to come.

DAY 09
A Bathhouse Pause Before Kazbegi
Travel back through Tbilisi for a traditional soak in one of the city’s brick-domed bathhouses, followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Continue north to the Kazbegi region and Stepantsminda, where Rooms Hotel Kazbegi provides a comfortable mountain base for the next two nights. The overall driving time is approximately four to five hours. From the hotel, the setting invites a quieter evening after the transfer, with the terrace offering views towards the mountains when visibility allows. Tomorrow’s programme returns to walking, so take time to settle in comfortably.
OVERNIGHT · Stepantsminda
DAY 10
Gergeti and the Chaukhi Peaks
Walk through the valleys and woodland towards Gergeti Trinity Church, whose elevated position opens views towards Mount Kazbek in clear weather. Allow two to three hours for the morning outing. Later, drive into the Sno Valley and continue to Juta, the starting point for an approximately three-hour hike towards the Chaukhi Mountains. These two walks reveal different sides of the Kazbegi landscape, from the church’s broad setting to sharper rocky peaks beyond Juta. Return to Rooms Hotel Kazbegi for a final mountain evening after a full day outside.

DAY 11
Return to Tbilisi, Carrying the Mountains
Drive back to Tbilisi, allowing about three hours, and check into Vinotel for the final city arrangements. The remainder of the day is free for independent exploration or rest, so you can revisit a favourite neighbourhood without another fixed sightseeing circuit. Gather for the farewell dinner before the airport transfer. Many departures fall after midnight, and hotel arrangements accommodate those schedules; your flight may therefore be dated the following calendar day. The walking programme itself remains eleven days, ending after the farewell evening in Tbilisi.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
Choose the right time for your journey.
Recommended months: Late June–early September; July–August offers the most reliable high-mountain access
Typical daytime temperatures: Around 23–25°C in Tusheti's villages in summer
Typical night temperatures: Around 15–18°C in village conditions; exposed high ground can be substantially colder
Late June–early September is the practical window for this mountain itinerary, with July–August offering the most reliable access to Tusheti’s high trails. Summer village conditions can be pleasantly warm, around 23–25°C by day and 15–18°C at night, but higher passes and exposed ridges can be substantially colder. Tbilisi and Kakheti are warmer than the mountains. Carry insulating layers and waterproofs: mountain rain and sudden temperature changes remain possible even during the preferred hiking season.
Temperatures are approximate seasonal averages, not a forecast. Final dates, access and local arrangements are confirmed before booking.
