DAY 01
Cairns • Gathering for the Voyage
Arrive in Cairns and transfer to the hotel for the first night of the expedition. This is a gentle beginning before the flight into Papua New Guinea, giving you time to recover from your journey and organise what you will need aboard ship. In the evening, meet the expedition guides and fellow travellers over dinner. Conversation turns toward the islands ahead, introducing the people who will share the coming days of exploration.
OVERNIGHT · Cairns hotel
DAY 02
Port Moresby • Art and Embarkation
After breakfast, fly to Port Moresby for the start of the Papua New Guinea section. Visit the National Museum and Arts Centre, where the collections provide an introduction to the artistic traditions encountered during the voyage. Later, board Heritage Adventurer and settle into your cabin. DAY 03
Doini • Forest and Reef
Doini introduces the meeting of forest, coastal history and reef life that characterises much of the voyage. Explore inland with the guides, including the traditional burial place known as Skull Cave where access is permitted. Local guidance is important when visiting this cultural site. Back by the water, a snorkeling opportunity offers a different view of the island through its coral gardens. The day moves naturally between experiences above and below the surface.

DAY 04
Cape Nelson & Tufi Harbour • A Sheltered Coast
The coast around Cape Nelson and Tufi Harbour brings steep cliffs, sheltered waterways and forested shores into view. Smaller-boat exploration allows a closer look before meeting local hosts and learning about their traditions. The programme also offers snorkeling in suitable waters and a walk in the surrounding forest. These contrasting activities reveal the landscape at several scales, from the broad coastal formations seen from the ship to the smaller details noticed along a trail.

DAY 05
D’Entrecasteaux • Dobu and Fergusson
Explore the D’Entrecasteaux Islands, with visits planned to Fergusson and Dobu. Fergusson’s geothermal area introduces hot springs, mud pools and geysers, while village encounters bring local interpretation to the landscape. On Dobu, learn about the island’s connection with the Kula exchange network and the traditions expressed through crafts and performance. Water activities may add another dimension to the day, with the expedition team organising the sequence around access and local conditions.

DAY 06
Trobriand Islands • Connections Across the Sea
The Trobriand Islands offer time with island communities and an introduction to the ceremonial relationships of the Kula exchange network. Listen to the explanations that give meaning to dances, carving and other expressions of local life. The islands’ ebony work, sometimes decorated with shell, rewards a close look at the craftsmanship. Snorkeling opportunities bring the day back to the sea, linking the cultural encounters ashore with the reefs surrounding the islands.

Papua New Guinea • life on the water
DAY 07
Rabaul • A Harbour with History
Rabaul’s harbour is the starting point for a day that moves between volcanic scenery and wartime history. Visit the hot springs and Observatory Ridge for a wider sense of the setting, then explore sites connected with the Japanese occupation, including Yamamoto’s bunker. The effects of the eruption form another part of the town’s story. At Kokopo market, everyday activity offers a lively contrast to the historical stops before you return to the ship.

DAY 08
Nissan • Life Around an Atoll
Nissan Island combines community encounters with the natural setting of a tropical atoll. Visit the Balil villages with local guidance, while reminders of the island’s wartime role add a historical layer to the day. A walk through wooded areas offers opportunities to look for birds without promising particular sightings. Later, the surrounding reefs invite exploration by snorkel, making a varied day of village life, forest observation and time in the water.

DAY 09
Bougainville • Into the Island Interior
The Bougainville programme focuses on the Arawa area, opening a window onto an island with a complex recent history. Planned visits include the Panguna mine site and Arawa market, each revealing a different aspect of local life and the wider landscape. Listen to the interpretation offered during the excursion rather than viewing the stops in isolation. Forested terrain and the coastal setting provide the background as the voyage reaches its final Papua New Guinea island call.

DAY 10
Kolombangara • A Conservation Landscape
Kolombangara introduces the Solomon Islands through its forest environment and surrounding waters. The planned visit to the Imbu Rano conservation area offers opportunities to look for birds with the guides, while learning why this habitat matters. Reef exploration, a Zodiac outing and a village visit may also feature in the programme. Local wood and stone carving provides another point of interest, bringing cultural craftsmanship into a day strongly shaped by nature.

DAY 11
Tetepare • A Place for Nature
Tetepare places conservation at the centre of the day. Learn about the community-led work associated with the island while exploring its rainforest and coastal environment with the expedition team. Keep watch for wildlife, remembering that this is a living habitat rather than a guaranteed viewing experience. The planned reef exploration adds an underwater perspective, with drift snorkeling dependent on suitable conditions. Time here encourages careful observation of the relationship between the forest, beaches and sea.
OVERNIGHT · On board Heritage Adventurer
DAY 12
Nggela Sule & Tulagi • Island Histories
Explore Nggela Sule and Tulagi, where coastal scenery and historical sites share the programme. At Roderick Bay, beach and forest exploration can be complemented by snorkeling in suitable conditions. Tulagi adds the context of its former administrative role and wartime history, including planned visits to Blue Beach and the Japanese U-caves. Guided interpretation connects these places, while local welcomes and the surrounding island landscape keep the day rooted in the present.
OVERNIGHT · On board Heritage Adventurer
DAY 13
Santa Ana • A Welcome at Port Mary
Arrive at Port Mary on Santa Ana, also known as Owaraha, for a day centred on local hospitality and the island environment. Browse handicrafts and follow the guides through forested areas, taking time to notice birds and other details along the way. Community encounters depend on local arrangements and should be approached respectfully. The coastal setting and opportunities by the water provide a relaxed counterpoint to the walks and cultural visits.

DAY 14
Nendö • Traditions of Temotu
Nendö brings an introduction to the traditions of the Santa Cruz Islands in Temotu Province. The programme focuses on the making of red feather money, known as Tevau, and the cultural meaning carried by this distinctive craft. Watching the process with local explanation is more rewarding than treating it simply as an unusual object. Dance and community encounters form part of the planned visit, adding human context to this stage of the island journey.
OVERNIGHT · On board Heritage Adventurer
DAY 15
Vanikoro • Forest and Reef
Vanikoro combines a historical encounter with opportunities to explore forest and reef. Visit the memorial associated with La Pérouse, then join the naturalists to look more closely at the island environment. Forest walks may reveal local birds and plants, while the surrounding barrier reef provides the setting for snorkeling when conditions allow. The day balances the story of an earlier voyage with your own chance to observe this remote archipelago at a slower pace.
OVERNIGHT · On board Heritage Adventurer
DAY 16
Espiritu Santo • Blue Water, Island Stories
Reach Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu, where the programme brings together Champagne Beach, the island’s blue holes and its wartime history. Enjoy the coastal setting and the planned local water-music performance before exploring further by Zodiac where conditions allow. Those interested in history can follow the visits to Luganville and Million Dollar Point. The variety of settings gives the day a different rhythm, moving from clear water and beach scenery to places with a historical story.

DAY 17
Ambrym & Efate • A Final Island Pair
At Ranon on Ambrym, the planned cultural visit introduces carving traditions and the Rom dance, with performances subject to local arrangements. A forest walk leads toward the setting for the dance and offers opportunities to observe plants and birds with the naturalists. Later, continue to Efate for the voyage’s final snorkeling opportunity. The contrast between the morning’s cultural encounter and the afternoon’s water activity makes a varied close to the expedition days.

DAY 18
Port Vila • Farewell to Melanesia
Arrive in Port Vila and disembark after breakfast. The arranged transfer takes you onward to the central hotel or airport, according to your confirmed plans. Allow enough time for the ship’s formalities before any flight; the programme advises against departures before midday. As you leave the ship, the voyage has carried you through distinct communities and landscapes, from Papua New Guinea’s islands to the Solomons and finally Vanuatu.
