A personally arranged journey through remarkable places, with time for the details that make them memorable.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
Japan rewards a traveller who notices the small things: a carefully placed stone, a folded robe, the grain of an old wooden doorway. This journey makes room for those details, combining city walks with traditional inns and the theatre of a seasonal festival.
Rail journeys connect Osaka, Matsue, Kinosaki, Kyoto and Takayama. Izumo’s shrine and Himeji’s castle broaden the story, while ryokan evenings let you experience a different rhythm of hospitality. Expect substantial walking, stairs and some floor-level dining; this is an immersive cultural journey rather than a coach-only sightseeing circuit.

DAY BY DAY
Your complete 14-day journey
DAY 01
An Evening in Osaka
Arrive in Osaka and settle into the airport hotel. Meet for an orientation and welcome dinner before the rail journey begins. The first evening provides a relaxed introduction to the group and the days ahead. There is no need to rush into sightseeing after the flight: take time to settle in, prepare for the train journeys and look forward to the smaller towns, traditional inns and cultural encounters to come.
OVERNIGHT · Osaka
DAY 02
Castle Walls beside the Water
Travel by train to Matsue. Explore Matsue Castle, then walk the samurai quarter and visit a preserved samurai residence. The riverside ryokan is home for three nights. The castle and residential lanes introduce the city through both its public history and more intimate domestic spaces. After the journey, the ryokan provides a welcome change of rhythm, with time to become familiar with the traditional setting before the next two days of exploration.
OVERNIGHT · Matsue
DAY 03
The Sacred Gate of Izumo
Take the train to Izumo Taisha. Explore the shrine precinct before returning to Matsue; the visit introduces a different strand of Japanese religious tradition. Allow the architecture, open spaces and sequence of gateways to set the pace of the visit. This excursion is an opportunity to look beyond individual monuments and appreciate the atmosphere of a place of worship before returning to the familiar surroundings of the ryokan.
OVERNIGHT · Matsue
Izumo Taisha
DAY 04
A Garden Framed as Art
Visit a local sake producer for a tasting, then the Adachi Museum of Art. Give the garden as much attention as the galleries: the windows become frames for living compositions. The contrast between the tasting and the museum makes this a day of careful observation and sensory detail. Look at how planting, stone and changing views work together, then carry that quieter rhythm back to the ryokan for your final evening in Matsue.
OVERNIGHT · Matsue
DAY 05
Along the Coast to the Hot Springs
Follow the Sea of Japan coast to Kinosaki Onsen. Settle into the ryokan and explore the town, with time for its hot-spring bathing tradition. The move from Matsue introduces another expression of traditional Japanese hospitality. Slow down after the journey, become familiar with bathing etiquette and choose how to use your time in town. The pleasure lies in allowing the hot-spring setting to shape the rhythm of the stay.
OVERNIGHT · Kinosaki Onsen
Kinosaki Onsen • riverside traditions
DAY 06
Soba in a Castle Town
Visit Izushi for its distinctive soba noodles. Return to Kinosaki for an afternoon of independent exploration or another soak in the baths. The excursion adds a culinary focus to the journey, with time to appreciate the town as well as its signature dish. Back in Kinosaki, the afternoon remains deliberately flexible, so you can choose between a gentle look around and a quieter return to the ryokan.
OVERNIGHT · Kinosaki Onsen
DAY 07
The Craft of Kyoto
Travel by train to Kyoto. Begin discovering its temples, smaller gardens and craft traditions. The published programme permits this day and Day 10 to exchange places around weekend scheduling. Kyoto introduces a richer concentration of the artistic traditions encountered along the way. Take the first discoveries at a measured pace, noticing details in the gardens and buildings rather than trying to absorb everything at once; several nights here allow the city to unfold gradually.
OVERNIGHT · Kyoto
DAY 08
Stone, Moss and Gold Leaf
Visit Ryoan-ji and the Daitokuji temple complex. Later, visit gold-leaf artist Noguchi San in his traditional machiya studio, bringing garden design and hand craftsmanship into the same day. The experiences invite close attention to surfaces, proportions and the skill behind apparently simple forms. Give the gardens time to make their impression before the studio encounter brings the focus to an individual maker and the practical work behind a decorative tradition.
OVERNIGHT · Kyoto
Ryoanji rock garden
DAY 09
The White Castle of Himeji
Make the day excursion to Himeji Castle. Explore the fortress before returning to Kyoto; stairs and substantial walking are part of the experience. The excursion offers a different architectural experience from the temples and gardens of Kyoto. Allow time to take in the relationship between the castle buildings and their setting, moving carefully through the interior before the journey back to your base for the evening.
OVERNIGHT · Kyoto
Himeji Castle
DAY 10
Kyoto Takes the Stage
Attend the seasonal geisha dance performance: Miyako Odori in spring or Onshu-kai in autumn. Day 7 and Day 10 may exchange places according to the departure schedule. The performance places living cultural tradition at the centre of the day. Watch the movement, costume and presentation with the same attention given to the gardens and crafts earlier in the journey. The seasonal programme determines which of these two performances forms part of your visit.
OVERNIGHT · Kyoto
DAY 11
Into the Hida Mountains
Continue by rail to Takayama. Explore the old mountain town and its merchant streets, where timber buildings provide a new contrast to Kyoto. The rail journey marks another change of landscape and atmosphere. Take time to notice the scale of the streets and the character of the old buildings, settling into a mountain-town rhythm before the festival experiences scheduled for the following day.
OVERNIGHT · Takayama
Takayama • historic merchant streets
DAY 12
A Town in Festival Dress
Spend the day in Takayama during its seasonal festival, with the scheduled shrine procession, decorated floats and karakuri puppet performances. Return to the ryokan for dinner. The programme centres on the festival rather than a hurried checklist of unrelated sights. Allow time to observe the craftsmanship and sense of occasion as the celebrations unfold, then enjoy the quieter atmosphere of the ryokan after a day spent amid the festivities.
OVERNIGHT · Takayama
Takayama festival floats
DAY 13
An Artist’s Farewell
Return by train to Kyoto and transfer to the hotel. Enjoy free time, visit artist Sarah Brayer’s studio, and gather for the farewell dinner with a geisha. The return to Kyoto brings the journey back to its artistic thread. The studio visit offers another personal perspective on creative work, while the farewell evening provides time to reflect on the gardens, inns, towns and performances experienced together.
OVERNIGHT · Kyoto
DAY 14
From Kyoto to the World
Transfer to Kyoto Station. Continue to Kansai Airport by Haruka Express, or to Itami Airport by airport limousine bus, for departure. The departure arrangements connect the final hotel stay with your chosen airport. Keep the day focused on the onward journey and allow the rail or bus connection to shape your timing. Your route through castles, shrines, hot-spring towns and traditional neighbourhoods comes to a close here.
