A considered journey through culture, landscapes and living history.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
From Tripoli’s lanes to the shaded passages of Ghadames, this eleven-day journey connects places that respond to very different landscapes. Roman coastal cities, a communal mountain granary and an oasis settlement create the western chapter, with enough time in each base to explore beyond a single postcard view.
A flight east introduces the Green Mountains and the archaeological sites of Apollonia, Ptolemais and Cyrene. The route finishes back in Tripoli, combining city walks, ancient sites and long drives through changing landscapes. Accommodation ranges from the capital to a locally styled oasis hotel.

DAY 01
A Mediterranean Welcome in Tripoli
Arrive in Tripoli and meet your local representative for the transfer to your hotel. The opening day is intentionally uncomplicated: check in, settle your luggage and recover from the journey before meeting your guide for an introduction to the days ahead. Dinner provides a relaxed beginning to a route that will eventually connect Mediterranean cities, mountain communities and the Sahara. Standard hotel check-in is in the afternoon; an early-morning arrival needs a separately arranged previous night if immediate room access is required. Overnight in the Libyan capital.
OVERNIGHT · Tripoli
DAY 02
Many Centuries, One Capital
Explore the Red Castle and the old town, moving through souks and lanes to Al-Naqah Mosque, if open. Karamanli House, the former British Consulate, Ottoman Clock Tower and Arch of Marcus Aurelius introduce different chapters of Tripoli. Continue through the Italian-era neighbourhoods, visit an old Christian church and the Second World War cemetery, then return for dinner. Look closely at thresholds, balconies and tiled surfaces: the capital rewards attention to small details as much as major monuments. The day combines walking with transfers between more widely separated stops.
OVERNIGHT · Tripoli

DAY 03
The Open Streets of Leptis Magna
Travel to Leptis Magna for a day among one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable archaeological landscapes. Walking through this extensive site makes the scale of an ancient city tangible: monumental stonework sits alongside spaces once used for ordinary public life. Allow time to look beyond a single famous façade and appreciate the relationship between the remains and their coastal setting. On the return route, Villa Sileen is retained as a stop, with the visit limited by its recorded closure; interior entry cannot be promised. Dinner and overnight are in Tripoli.

DAY 04
Across the Highlands to Ghadames
Leave the coast for a substantial overland journey through Jebel Nafusa. The scenery changes steadily as the road climbs into the highlands and continues towards the desert. Stop at Qasr al-Haj, whose remarkable communal granary turns the practical business of storing food into an arresting architectural experience. Its repeated chambers offer a different perspective on the relationship between community and landscape. Continue to Ghadames and settle into the oasis hotel for dinner. This is principally a travel day, with the granary visit providing its major cultural pause along the way.
OVERNIGHT · Ghadames
Qasr al-Haj — communal granary
DAY 05
An Oasis of Shade and Desert Light
Explore Ghadames on foot, following the old town’s sheltered passages and studying buildings designed around the demands of a desert climate. Palm groves and gardens provide another perspective on the oasis, connecting settlement with the water and cultivation that sustain it. Lunch is arranged in a traditional house, creating a quieter pause between the morning’s discoveries and the afternoon outing. Later, travel by four-wheel-drive vehicle to the surrounding dunes for sunset. Watch changing light define the sand before returning to your hotel for dinner and a second night in Ghadames.

DAY 06
Below the Earth, Beyond the Mountains
Begin the return journey to Tripoli through the Nafusa Mountains, stopping in Gharyan to explore its distinctive underground dwellings. These homes invite a practical reading of architecture: walls, courtyards and sheltered rooms answer the challenge of strong seasonal heat. Your guide places the dwellings within Amazigh heritage without reducing the region to a single historical moment. The contrast with Ghadames is part of the day’s appeal, showing another response to living in a demanding environment. Continue across the changing landscape to Tripoli, where dinner and a hotel night await.
OVERNIGHT · Tripoli
DAY 07
Sabratha and a Final Medina Stroll
Drive west to Sabratha and explore its theatre, baths and temples beside the Mediterranean. The open setting gives the stone remains a different atmosphere from the enclosed streets of Tripoli, while the theatre provides an especially memorable focus for the visit. Return to the capital with time to freshen up and rest. Later, join your guide for another walk through the old town, revisiting its lanes or browsing for souvenirs at an unhurried pace. Dinner in a local restaurant concludes this last full day in western Libya before the eastern chapter.
OVERNIGHT · Tripoli
DAY 08
Fly East to the Green Mountain Coast
Transfer to the airport for the flight from Tripoli to Albayda, arriving through Al Abraq Airport. After the hotel transfer and a rest, drive to Soussa and the archaeological remains of Apollonia. The eastern coastline introduces a new landscape and another strand of the country’s ancient connections across the Mediterranean. Continue to Ras al-Hilal, where mountains and sea frame the coastal scenery, before returning to your hotel. Flight timing determines the practical rhythm of the day; no fixed departure hour is assumed. Dinner and overnight are in the Albayda area.
OVERNIGHT · Albayda
DAY 09
Ptolemais and the Mosaic Stories
Follow the coastal road to Ptolemais for an exploration of its archaeological remains. Here the interest lies in reading a city across its surviving spaces rather than treating every ruin as an isolated monument. Continue through the Green Mountains to Qasr Libya and its museum of early Byzantine mosaics. The detailed pictures offer a striking change of scale after the broad city landscape, inviting attention to individual figures and decorative choices. After lunch, return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure, allowing time to rest before the next day’s Cyrene visit.
OVERNIGHT · Albayda
DAY 10
Cyrene Above the Sea
Explore Cyrene from the upper city, taking in the Agora, gymnasium, forum, Roman basilica, Temple of Demeter and Tomb of Battus. Descend towards the Temple and Fountain of Apollo, then see the Great Baths and theatre. A museum visit brings sculptural detail into focus after the extensive outdoor remains. The sequence involves uneven ground and changes of level, so allow a measured walking pace. Afterwards, transfer to the airport for the flight back to Tripoli. Meet your representative on arrival and settle into the hotel for dinner and your final night.
OVERNIGHT · Tripoli
Cyrene — sanctuary of Apollo
DAY 11
Farewell to Libya
After breakfast, transfer to Tripoli airport for your onward flight. No additional sightseeing is scheduled today, allowing the departure arrangements to follow your confirmed flight rather than an artificial final-day programme. Keep travel documents and essential items readily accessible, and leave time for the airport formalities. The journey closes after connecting the capital and its Roman neighbours with Ghadames, the Nafusa Mountains and the eastern archaeological cities. Your last morning is therefore a practical, relaxed conclusion to the route, with any onward travel arranged separately around the confirmed departure.

Recommended months: March and November; October and April are warmer alternatives
Typical daytime temperatures: Approximately 20–25°C in March and November
Typical night temperatures: Approximately 9–15°C
March and November are particularly comfortable for combining the Mediterranean coast with Ghadames and the desert. Typical daytime highs are approximately 20–25°C, with nights around 9–15°C depending on location. October and April are also suitable, although desert afternoons commonly approach 30°C. Pack layers for cooler evenings and a light windproof jacket for coastal visits. Mid-May through September brings much stronger inland heat, while occasional dusty winds can affect spring touring.
