A personally arranged journey through remarkable places, with time for the details that make them memorable.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
Bring curiosity as well as a camera. A forest walk here can pause for something almost invisible, then begin again when a call sounds above the canopy. Madagascar offers a wildlife journey in which the details are as rewarding as the celebrated landscapes.
The route links eastern rainforest, the western baobab country and the sandstone landscapes of Isalo. Three charter sectors reduce the longest overland connections, while guided walking remains central to the experience. Lodges provide comfortable bases, but forest trails and road journeys retain the character of an active expedition.

DAY BY DAY
Your complete 15-day journey
DAY 01
A Malagasy Welcome
Arrive in Antananarivo and transfer to the hotel. The welcome evening includes Malagasy singing and the valiha. An early-arrival city tour, available only when arriving the previous day, visits the Queen’s Palace, Photography Museum and Tsimbazaza’s anthropological museum. This first evening introduces the island through music and a chance to settle in after the flight. The additional city visit is tied to an extra early-arrival day and should not be confused with a guaranteed excursion after today’s arrival.
OVERNIGHT · Antananarivo
DAY 02
Into the Eastern Rainforest
Drive through the highlands, stopping at La Mandraka Nature Farm. Continue to Andasibe-Mantadia and join an evening wildlife walk to search for nocturnal animals. The drive introduces the changing landscape between the capital and the eastern forests. After reaching your base, the evening walk invites a different kind of observation: move attentively, listen carefully and allow time for small details rather than expecting wildlife to appear on demand.
OVERNIGHT · Andasibe
Parson’s chameleon, Andasibe
DAY 03
Beneath the Rainforest Canopy
Begin the two-day exploration of Analamazoatra Reserve and the forests of Mantadia, looking for indri and other wildlife. The precise order of the forest visits remains flexible across today and tomorrow. Optional early birding and different walking paces allow room for observation and photography. Move patiently beneath the canopy, giving small movements and distant calls time to reveal their source, before returning to your Andasibe base.
OVERNIGHT · Andasibe
DAY 04
Forest Life and Village Encounters
Continue the Andasibe forest programme, completing the visits to Analamazoatra and Mantadia in the locally arranged order. Across these two days, one afternoon also includes Andasibe village, a reforestation project and tea at a local guide’s home; its exact placement remains flexible. These encounters add a human perspective to the wildlife walks, connecting the forest experience with people who live and work beside it.
OVERNIGHT · Andasibe
DAY 05
Lemur Island and the Capital
Visit the Lemur Island sanctuary in the morning. Return by road to Antananarivo; the evening and dinner are independent. The sanctuary visit provides a final morning in the Andasibe area before the journey back across the highlands. The return to the capital creates a pause between the eastern forest section and the western coast, with the evening left free rather than filled with another scheduled excursion.
OVERNIGHT · Antananarivo
DAY 06
An Avenue unlike Any Other
Fly by private charter to Morondava. Visit the Avenue of the Baobabs, participate in the seedling project and stay for sunset before returning to the coastal hotel. The flight changes the scale of the journey, linking the forest experience with western Madagascar. At the avenue, allow time to look beyond the famous silhouettes and appreciate the setting; the seedling activity adds a practical connection to the landscape before the evening light arrives.
OVERNIGHT · Morondava
DAY 07
The Dry Forest Option
Take the optional excursion to the Menabe Antimena area at Akiba Lodge for endemic wildlife. Alternatively, remain at the hotel. Return with time to enjoy the coast. The alternatives make this a flexible day within the western section of the journey. Those joining the outing can concentrate on observation in another habitat, while anyone staying behind can enjoy a quieter pace before the route moves inland again the following day.
OVERNIGHT · Morondava
DAY 08
From Baobabs to Rainforest
An optional early visit returns to the baobabs for sunrise. Fly by charter to Fianarantsoa, drive to Ranomafana and visit the ValBio research centre. The optional sunrise outing offers another perspective on the same landscape before the charter connection. On arrival in the rainforest region, the research-centre visit adds context to the wildlife experiences ahead, linking observation in the field with the work of understanding the forest.
OVERNIGHT · Ranomafana
Namorona River • Ranomafana National Park
DAY 09
A Closer Look at Ranomafana
Explore the forest with walking options suited to different interests and stamina. Search for wildlife, allow time for birding, and visit Ranomafana’s botanical garden. This is a day for patient observation rather than covering the greatest possible distance. Match the walking option to your energy and interests, leaving room to pause over a call, movement or plant detail before the botanical garden adds another perspective on the region.
OVERNIGHT · Ranomafana
Mantella baroni frog, Ranomafana
DAY 10
Weavers and Highland Roads
Enjoy a final morning walk in Ranomafana. Visit the women’s weaving cooperative after lunch, then drive south to Ambalavao through the highland landscape. The morning offers one more opportunity to experience the forest before the emphasis changes to local craft and the road south. At the cooperative, appreciate the work behind the woven pieces, then enjoy the changing views as the journey continues through the highlands.
OVERNIGHT · Ambalavao
DAY 11
Ring-Tails on the Rocks
Stop at community-run Anja Reserve for a walk among its granite outcrops and ring-tailed lemurs. Continue to Isalo and settle into the lodge. The reserve brings wildlife and community involvement together in a distinctive rocky setting. Take the walk at an observant pace, allowing the animals to remain the focus without promising particular sightings. Afterwards, the drive to Isalo introduces the next landscape chapter of the journey.
OVERNIGHT · Isalo
Ring-tailed lemur
DAY 12
Pools beneath Sandstone Peaks
Walk to the Piscine Naturelle in Isalo. Return for an afternoon at leisure, then visit the Window of Isalo at sunset. The morning walk and the evening viewpoint frame a day with time to rest between outings. Appreciate how the sandstone landscape changes in different light, returning to the lodge during the afternoon rather than filling every hour with another activity.
OVERNIGHT · Isalo
Isalo National Park
DAY 13
Where Two Forest Worlds Meet
Make the excursion to Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park. Explore its dry forest habitats before returning to Isalo for a late lunch and the final lodge night. The forest outing adds another habitat to the journey after the walks around Isalo. Spend time observing the vegetation and looking for wildlife at a measured pace, then return to the lodge for a more relaxed end to this final full day in the region.
OVERNIGHT · Isalo
Isalo • sandstone highlands
DAY 14
Back to Antananarivo
Fly by private charter from Isalo to the capital. Gather for the farewell dinner and a final night in Antananarivo. The flight brings the three regional chapters together without a long return drive. Settle back into the capital before the evening gathering, with time to reflect on rainforest walks, coastal baobabs, community encounters and the sandstone scenery around Isalo.
OVERNIGHT · Antananarivo
DAY 15
A Last Taste of Madagascar
Join the optional cooking class near the airport, with an earlier market visit for those who wish. Enjoy lunch before the airport transfer and departure. The optional activities offer a gentle culinary conclusion rather than another demanding excursion. Join according to your interests and departure arrangements, then allow time for the onward flight. The journey ends with the island’s landscapes and wildlife complemented by a final encounter with local food.
