A considered journey through culture, landscapes and living history.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
The Atlantic fishing port of Nouakchott gives way to the long inland road and the stone settlements of the Adrar. Eight days connect markets, manuscript libraries and old caravan towns with a landscape of canyons, oases and remarkable geological forms. The route balances cultural encounters with the distances that define travel through this part of the Sahara.
Chinguetti provides two nights for exploring its libraries and making the journey towards Richat and Ouadane. Atar anchors excursions through Amogjar, Terjit and Azougui before the return to the capital. Simple regional accommodation remains part of the experience; a final day room in Nouakchott provides a useful pause before departure.

DAY BY DAY
Your complete 8-day journey
DAY 01
Arrive Where the Sahara Meets the Atlantic
Arrive in Nouakchott and meet your local representative for the transfer to the hotel. This first day is reserved for arrival and settling in, giving you time to rest before the capital’s visits begin tomorrow. The journey ahead will move inland towards the Adrar, linking living towns, historic caravan settlements and desert landscapes. Standard hotel check-in is in the afternoon; if your flight arrives early and immediate room access matters, an additional previous night must be arranged separately. Spend your first night in the capital, with no extra touring assumed.
OVERNIGHT · Nouakchott
DAY 02
Boats, Markets and the Capital
Begin with the National Museum, then visit Port de Pêche to see the fishing boats and the activity surrounding the catch. Lunch follows at a restaurant known for fish. Pass the Saudi Mosque and see the Mosque of Ould Abas before exploring Marché Capitale, where the market introduces a different aspect of everyday commerce. These visits connect the museum’s historical perspective with the working city outside. Ask before photographing people and allow the harbour’s activity to guide your attention. Return to the hotel for dinner and a second night in Nouakchott.
OVERNIGHT · Nouakchott
Mauritania — Atlantic fishing boats
DAY 03
The Long Road into Adrar
Leave Nouakchott for Atar, travelling inland on a drive of approximately five and a half hours before stops. Encounters with nomadic camps depend on where people are staying and whether a visit is welcome. In Atar, explore the small market, historic mosque and museum before settling into your hotel. The day marks a decisive change from the Atlantic-facing capital to the interior. Long distances are an essential part of understanding this journey, so the drive is balanced with pauses and a straightforward evening.
OVERNIGHT · Atar
Mauritania — Saharan cultural encounter
DAY 04
Libraries at the Edge of the Sands
Continue to Chinguetti, roughly an hour and a half from Atar before sightseeing stops. Explore the old settlement’s stone architecture and Friday Mosque area, then visit its manuscript libraries, including Ould Habott. The experience is as much about careful looking as movement: modest doors and rooms can contain objects that connect the town with a much wider intellectual world. Library access is handled respectfully with the custodians, and manuscripts should never be touched without permission. Settle into your local accommodation for dinner and an overnight close to the desert.
OVERNIGHT · Chinguetti
Chinguetti — manuscript library
DAY 05
The Eye of the Sahara and Ouadane
Travel towards Guelb er Richat, the enormous geological formation often called the Eye of the Sahara, then continue to Ouadane. From ground level, this is an encounter with the surrounding landforms rather than the complete circular aerial image familiar from photographs. In Ouadane, walk among the remains of the old caravan settlement and consider the distances once crossed by traders. The day combines geology with the architecture of a desert town, using the road itself to connect their settings. Return to Chinguetti for dinner and a second overnight in the town.
OVERNIGHT · Chinguetti
Ouadane — historic stone lanes
DAY 06
Canyon Country and Ancient Marks
Leave Chinguetti for Atar by way of the Amogjar Pass. Canyon and mountain views shape the morning, with the landscape taking precedence over any single building or monument. The route includes the area associated with the film Fort Saganne, followed after lunch by caves containing prehistoric rock paintings. Take time to examine the figures without touching the painted surfaces; their survival depends on careful visitation. Continue to Atar and return to your hotel for dinner. Although the direct drive is relatively short, the day is arranged around these important stops.
OVERNIGHT · Atar
Amogjar Pass — Adrar plateau
DAY 07
An Oasis Pause and an Older Capital
Drive through the White Valley towards Terjit, where palms and water create an abrupt contrast with the surrounding arid landscape. Explore the oasis and its pools, with any swimming dependent on local conditions and guidance. Continue to Azougui to see remains associated with the Almoravid settlement, including the area of Imam Hadrami’s necropolis. The day moves between a living oasis of shade and water and traces of a much earlier political centre. Return to Atar for dinner and the final inland overnight, before tomorrow’s long drive back to the coast.
After breakfast, begin the return drive to Nouakchott. On arrival, a hotel room is arranged for a rest and the opportunity to freshen up before the airport transfer. This practical pause is especially welcome after the road journey at the end of the overland route. Lunch and dinner are arranged during the day, with timing coordinated around the confirmed flight. No additional sightseeing is scheduled, and no further extension is attached to this itinerary. Depart from Nouakchott with the desert chapter complete and your onward plans handled separately.
OVERNIGHT · Departure — day room in Nouakchott
