Oman — Dunes, Mountain Villages & the Frankincense Coast
A personally arranged journey through remarkable places, with time for the details that make them memorable.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
A journey through Oman changes character with each landscape: Muscat’s maritime capital, the dunes of Wahiba, mountain settlements around Jabal Akhdar and the frankincense country of Dhofar. Twelve days allow time for cultural visits, short walks and the simple pleasure of pausing beside the sea.
Travel south after exploring the northern interior, with three nights in Salalah. A mountain resort, a desert camp and accommodation beside a turtle reserve bring the places themselves into the experience.

DAY 01
A Seaside Welcome
Arrive in Muscat and transfer to Al Bandar Hotel. Settle into the coastal setting before an evening welcome dinner and an introduction to the journey ahead. This first evening is deliberately gentle, with the sea providing a calm backdrop after your flight. Over dinner, get acquainted with your travelling companions and the contrasts ahead: a maritime capital, desert sands, mountain villages and the southern coast.
OVERNIGHT · Muscat
DAY 02
Muscat, by Land and Sea
Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Bait Al Zubair Museum and the exterior of Al Alam Palace before exploring Muttrah Souk. After a local restaurant lunch, take a dhow cruise along the coast, viewing Muscat Harbour, the palace and the forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani from the water. The contrast between the busy market and the open water gives this opening exploration its character. Take time to notice the different perspectives of the capital as the day moves from monumental architecture to everyday commerce and the waterfront.
OVERNIGHT · Muscat
Al Alam Palace, Muscat
DAY 03
Boatbuilders and the Turtle Coast
Continue to Sur to see traditional dhow construction and meet the boatbuilders. The day also includes Wadi Tiwi, Bimmah Sinkhole and an opportunity to swim when conditions permit. Reach Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve for dinner and a night close to the nesting beach. From working waterfront to rocky valley and open shore, the scenery changes throughout the journey. The boatbuilding visit brings a human dimension to the coast, while the reserve introduces the natural rhythms that shape life along this stretch of Oman.
OVERNIGHT · Ras Al Jinz
Wadi Tiwi
DAY 04
From the Shore to the Dunes
Join an ecologist for an early beach walk to look for nesting turtles or hatchlings; wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions. Travel into Sharqiya and Wahiba Sands, with a possible Bedouin family visit for coffee and dates. At Desert Nights Camp, enjoy an optional camel ride, dune sunset and dinner with Bedouin music. The change from ocean air to desert stillness is part of the pleasure. Watch the contours of the dunes become more pronounced as the light softens, before returning to camp for the evening.
OVERNIGHT · Wahiba Sands
Wahiba Sands • sunset over the dunes
DAY 05
The Waterways of Birkat Al Mouz
Leave the dunes for Birkat Al Mouz, where mudbrick buildings and falaj channels reveal how water shaped settlement in the interior. After a picnic, climb into the Jabal Akhdar mountains and settle at Alila Jabal Akhdar. The afternoon opens onto a very different Oman of cliffs and cooler air. Look closely at the relationship between the old buildings, gardens and irrigation channels before the landscape changes again on the ascent. The resort setting offers an opportunity to absorb the scale of the mountains without another long drive.
OVERNIGHT · Jabal Akhdar
Palm-lined Birkat Al Mouz
DAY 06
A Day in the High Country
Spend the day hiking and exploring Jabal Akhdar, a region associated with terraced cultivation and rose water. Return to the mountain resort with time to enjoy its setting. Available hotel activities may include yoga, geology walks or stargazing; the day’s main focus remains the surrounding mountain landscape. Take the walking at a comfortable pace, allowing time to appreciate the terraces and the contrast between cultivated land and bare rock. Back at the resort, the mountain outlook is as much a part of the afternoon as any optional activity.
OVERNIGHT · Jabal Akhdar
Terraced orchards of Jabal Akhdar
DAY 07
Nizwa’s Market Morning
Begin early at Nizwa’s Friday livestock market, then explore the souk and Nizwa Fort. Continue to Al Hamra for a picnic in a date plantation and a visit to Bait Al Safar, a living museum of traditional domestic life. Return to Nizwa for dinner and the night. The morning market and the afternoon house museum offer two different perspectives on everyday Omani life. Between them, the fort and date plantation connect the town to the agricultural landscape that has sustained it.
OVERNIGHT · Nizwa
Nizwa Fort
DAY 08
Across the Hajar to Muscat
Travel through Wadi Bani Auf on the mountain crossing back toward Muscat. The programme includes Al Jabreen Castle, with its decorated interiors, and lunch at a mountain refuge. Reach the capital later in the afternoon and settle at Hormuz Grand Muscat. This is a day to appreciate the varied textures of the interior, from rugged mountain slopes to carefully finished castle rooms. The return to Muscat also creates a natural pause between the northern journey and the flight south.
OVERNIGHT · Muscat
DAY 09
South to the Frankincense Coast
Fly from Muscat to Salalah. After lunch, walk in a coconut and banana plantation, explore Old Salalah and see the Sultan’s Palace. Visit the frankincense souk to discover the resins and burners associated with Dhofar’s historic trade. Settle beside the sea at Al Baleed Resort Salalah. The palms, coastal air and market aromas give this arrival a different character from the northern towns. Allow time to examine the frankincense displays and to settle into the new surroundings before the next day explores their history in greater depth.
OVERNIGHT · Salalah
DAY 10
Ports of the Ancient Trade
Visit the frankincense museum at Al Baleed with an archaeologist, then explore Samhuram above the Khor Rori estuary. These stops introduce the region’s maritime history before a traditional restaurant lunch. Continue to Wadi Darbat and its river landscape, then return to Salalah. The archaeological sites help connect the frankincense trade with the coastline you are exploring today. Afterwards, the wadi offers a change of pace and scenery, balancing the historical visits with time outdoors before the drive back to the resort.
OVERNIGHT · Salalah
Al Baleed Archaeological ParkWadi Darbat • seasonal river landscape
DAY 11
The White Sands of Dhofar
Visit Salalah’s Sultan Qaboos Mosque and the local market before driving to Al Fazayah Beach. Enjoy a picnic and time beside the sea, with swimming dependent on local conditions. Return for a farewell dinner and a final night on the Dhofar coast. This final full day balances the town with a relaxed coastal outing. Leave time to enjoy the beach setting at an easy pace before gathering over dinner to recall the desert, mountain and maritime landscapes of the journey.
OVERNIGHT · Salalah
DAY 12
Farewell to Oman
Transfer to Salalah Airport for your onward flight. The journey concludes in Salalah; any connection through Muscat depends on the flights selected. Allow the remainder of the day to follow your departure arrangements rather than adding further sightseeing. From the northern capital to the frankincense coast, the route has connected contrasting landscapes and ways of life; today is reserved for a straightforward conclusion and your onward travel.
