South Sudan, Encounters Beyond the Familiar

A seven-day cultural passage through Mundari, Lotuko, Larim and Toposa country

THE JOURNEY

A closer connection to the place.

Begin in Juba and journey into the communities and landscapes of South Sudan. A day in Mundari country introduces Terekeka’s market and a cattle camp before the route turns towards Torit, Larim villages and Kapoeta. Time with local hosts gives the journey its character, supported by a guide who helps conversations and visits unfold respectfully.

The seven-day journey includes hotel nights in Juba, Torit and Kapoeta and a return to the capital before departure. Community visits and dance welcomes respond to the hosts and local circumstances. The emphasis is on people, architecture and everyday life, with local guidance opening conversations and helping each encounter remain thoughtful and personal.

Torit and an Encounter with the Lotuko

Travel from Juba to Torit after breakfast, then visit a Lotuko community in the surrounding region. The encounter introduces agricultural and pastoral livelihoods, the design of homes and the importance of stories and shared traditions. Your guide helps place the visit in context, allowing residents to explain their own community rather than presenting it as a fixed picture of the past. Dance has an important cultural role, although a performance depends on the hosts and local circumstances. After time in the village, return to your accommodation at Torit Hotel for the night.

Toposa Communities and Living Traditions

Set out from Kapoeta to visit Toposa communities, with the day devoted to encounters rather than a succession of distant landmarks.
