Ancient worlds. Beautiful landscapes. A journey with a sense of place.
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
Tunisia rewards a journey that moves beyond a single landscape. This twelve-day route begins beside the Mediterranean, enters the historic towns and archaeological sites of the interior, and continues to oasis country and a night among the dunes. Walking, local food traditions and distinctive architecture provide the thread between its changing settings.
From Tunis and Carthage to Dougga, Kairouan and Tozeur, the programme builds a varied portrait of the country before reaching the southern villages around Tataouine. El Jem, Monastir and Sousse complete the return north. A characterful oasis-house room is featured as an accommodation example, while the desert night retains its simpler, atmospheric camp setting.

DAY BY DAY
Your complete 12-day journey
DAY 01
A Blue-and-White Beginning
Arrive in Tunis and settle into nearby Sidi Bou Said, your base for the opening nights. Accommodation is available from mid-afternoon, with the first day centred on arrival rather than a scheduled city tour. Let the Mediterranean setting introduce the journey gently, giving yourself time to rest and become familiar with the hotel. Tomorrow brings the capital and Carthage; for now, the pleasure is simply in reaching a place with a distinctive atmosphere. The route ahead will move steadily inland and south before returning to the coast for its final chapter.
OVERNIGHT · Sidi Bou Said
Sidi Bou Said — white walls and Mediterranean blue
DAY 02
Tunis and the Memory of Carthage
Begin with the medina of Tunis and the Bardo Museum before continuing to Carthage. These visits offer different ways of understanding the country: the texture of a living urban quarter, objects and artworks seen in a museum, and the spaces of an archaeological landscape. Give each its own attention, allowing the contrasts to be part of the experience. Return to Sidi Bou Said later in the day, where the coastal setting provides a welcome change of pace. The first full day establishes themes that will reappear throughout the journey in new forms.
OVERNIGHT · Sidi Bou Said
Carthage — ancient columns beside the sea
DAY 03
From Testour to the Ancient Cities
Leave Tunis for Testour, then continue to Dougga and Bulla Regia before reaching Le Kef. Today’s route invites close attention to how places are arranged, from the streets of a town to the surviving spaces of ancient settlements. At the archaeological sites, allow time both for wider views and for details that bring domestic life into focus. The journey ends inland, marking a clear change from the opening coastal nights. Depending on availability and group size, accommodation in Le Kef may be divided between two properties, without changing the planned route.
OVERNIGHT · Le Kef
Dougga — the Capitol
DAY 04
Mountain Villages and the Road to Kairouan
Spend a little time in Le Kef before travelling through Elles, Makthar and Kesra to Kairouan. The day links prehistoric tombs, an archaeological site and museum, and a mountain village, giving the journey a varied rhythm. A packed lunch helps preserve time for the visits rather than adding another stop to an already full route. In Kairouan, an evening visit to a carpet shop introduces the making of local textiles. Observe the work and ask questions at your own pace; any purchase is a personal choice, separate from enjoying the encounter.
OVERNIGHT · Kairouan
Le Kef — the hilltop town
DAY 05
Sacred Spaces and an Oasis Arrival
Explore Kairouan’s Great Mosque, Barber Mausoleum and old town, with a makroud-making demonstration adding a domestic perspective to the morning. Continue via the National Museum of Islamic Art at Raqqada before travelling to Tozeur. The day moves from religious and artistic traditions towards the landscapes of the south, with approximately five hours of driving. Arrive at the oasis with time to settle into your accommodation after a substantial day. Depending on availability and group size, the stay may use two properties, while the planned visits and onward sequence remain the same.
OVERNIGHT · Tozeur
Kairouan — the Great Mosque
DAY 06
Palm Groves and Desert Neighbourhoods
Explore the Tozeur region by 4WD, with Chebika, Tamerza and Mides forming the planned excursion when access permits. The programme includes a short rocky walk near Chebika, Eden Palm and the old town of Tozeur. If the border-area restrictions remain, the alternative route visits Ong Jmel, the Mos Espa film set and Nefta, followed by the Tozeur oasis and old town. Your day follows the locally confirmed option rather than combining both routes. Either arrangement balances broad landscapes with closer encounters, keeping the oasis and its surrounding country at the centre of the experience.
OVERNIGHT · Tozeur
Ong Jmel — desert landscapes on the alternative Day 6 route
DAY 07
Across the Salt Lake to the Dunes
Cross Chott El Jerid and continue to Douz, where 4WD vehicles take over for the journey into the desert. The change of transport marks a change of atmosphere, as the route leaves the town behind and reaches a fixed camp among the dunes. The camp journey takes about three hours, with the afternoon available for rest or easy nearby walks. Accommodation provides beds and some private facilities, but no air conditioning. An overnight bag is useful, allowing the larger luggage to remain stored while you enjoy a simpler night in the Sahara.
OVERNIGHT · Desert camp

DAY 08
Homes Shaped by the Landscape
Return by 4WD to Douz and continue by road towards Tataouine. At Matmata, visit a local home to learn about the distinctive dwellings, with a demonstration and tea providing an opportunity to listen as well as look. Continue through Toujane, taking in the views and local carpets before completing the journey. The day is especially rewarding when the buildings are considered in relation to their surroundings: materials, light and shelter become part of the story. Arrive in Tataouine for a two-night stay, with tomorrow devoted to the neighbouring villages and their landscapes.
OVERNIGHT · Tataouine
Tataouine region — the southern landscape
DAY 09
Walking Between the Hill Villages
Explore the country around Tataouine, including the guided walk between Douiret and Chenini and a visit to Ksar Ouled Soltane. The walk covers approximately eight kilometres over two to three hours, following rocky paths with some exposed sections. Comfortable footwear and a steady pace make the landscape easier to appreciate. Look back occasionally as well as ahead: changing viewpoints help reveal how the villages occupy the hills. The granary visit provides another perspective on local architecture before returning to Tataouine, completing a day that combines active exploration with time to observe the built environment.
OVERNIGHT · Tataouine
Ksar Ouled Soltane — fortified granaries
DAY 10
The Great Arena of El Jem
Travel north to El Jem, allowing approximately four hours for the drive. The amphitheatre is the central experience of the day, offering both an impressive overall view and the chance to consider how such a large structure was organised. Take the steps at a comfortable pace and allow time to pause, rather than approaching the visit as a climb to complete. After the desert and hill villages, this monumental setting creates a striking change of scale. Stay in El Jem tonight, keeping the focus on the ancient site before tomorrow’s return to the coast.
OVERNIGHT · El Jem
El Jem — Roman amphitheatre
DAY 11
Forts and Medinas by the Sea
Continue to Monastir, where the ribat and the mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba introduce the day’s coastal setting. After lunch, travel to Sousse to explore its medina before returning to Monastir for the night. Moving between the two towns allows different urban atmospheres to emerge: monumental spaces in one, the close detail of streets and shops in the other. Enjoy the renewed presence of the Mediterranean after the inland journey. This final full day connects the coast with the wider experience, rather than treating it simply as a place to end the trip.
OVERNIGHT · Monastir
Monastir — the Mediterranean waterfront
DAY 12
The Coast Road to Tunis
Travel north from Monastir to Tunis, where the journey ends at Carthage Airport in time for the relevant departure arrangements. The morning is devoted to the return transfer rather than an additional sightseeing programme. Keep travel documents and departure essentials accessible, and allow the drive to provide a final view of the country between its coastal towns. Tunisia has revealed itself through medinas, ancient sites, working traditions, oasis landscapes and desert nights. Today brings those experiences together as one completed journey, with the last practical details handled before your onward flight.

WHEN TO TRAVEL
Choose the right time for your journey.
Recommended months: April and October; March and November are cooler alternatives
Typical daytime temperatures: Tozeur around 26°C in April and 28°C in October
Typical night temperatures: Tozeur around 17°C in October; cooler spring evenings
April and October are the best-balanced months for this journey from Tunisia’s northern heritage sites to the southern oases and desert. Tozeur typically reaches around 26°C in April and 28°C in October, with October nights near 17°C. Northern sites and spring evenings can feel cooler, so bring a light layer, especially for desert camping. March and November are also possible but cooler. These shoulder seasons avoid the strongest summer heat, when southern daytime averages approach 39°C.
Temperatures are approximate seasonal averages, not a forecast. Final dates, access and local arrangements are confirmed before booking.
