Mud-brick skylines, sacred towns and the valleys of Hadhramaut
THE JOURNEY
A closer connection to the place.
Explore a distinctive corner of southern Arabia, where tall earthen houses rise against steep valley walls. This journey travels through Hadhramaut from a base near Seiyun to the settlements of Wadi Doan, pairing architecture and everyday life with time to appreciate the landscape. Shibam provides the most famous skyline; smaller villages offer equally memorable encounters with the region’s building traditions.
The eight-day programme begins and ends in Cairo, with five nights in Yemen and a final cultural afternoon in Egypt. The route travels through Seiyun, Tarim, Aynat and Wadi Doan; Sana’a is not included. Comfortable local accommodation and road travel support an exploratory journey where arrangements may change with conditions.

Your complete 8-day journey
DAY 01
Arrival beside the Nile
Arrive in Cairo and meet the arrival representative before transferring to your hotel. Today is reserved for checking in and recovering from the international journey, with no scheduled sightseeing added to the programme. Use the quieter hours to settle in and prepare for the onward flight to Seiyun. Cairo serves as the gateway at both ends of this itinerary, connecting the Egyptian capital with Hadhramaut in southern Arabia. Standard room access begins in the afternoon; an earlier arrival may require a separately arranged additional hotel night.

DAY 02
Into the Hadhramaut Valley
Transfer to Cairo airport early for the flight to Seiyun. On arrival, meet the local team and travel to Hawta Palace Hotel, your base for the first two nights in Yemen. The surrounding landscape introduces the journey’s central contrast: cultivated valley floors beneath broad, steep-sided uplands. After checking in, the afternoon remains free for rest rather than a scheduled excursion. Settle into the hotel, prepare for tomorrow’s full day in Seiyun and Tarim, and enjoy dinner before a restful night in the valley.
OVERNIGHT · Hawta
DAY 03
Palaces, Markets and Sacred Tarim
Explore Seiyun through its Old Gate, Al-Handhal market and the garden of Sultan Al-Kathiri Palace; the museum is closed on Fridays. Continue to the produce market and Al-Fals Palace before travelling to Tarim. After lunch, visit the Sufi shrines around Aynat, then return to Tarim for Asha Historical Palace, its small market and Al-Mihdar Mosque. The day connects trading streets, earthen palaces and religious landmarks rather than concentrating on a single monument. Return to Hawta Palace Hotel for dinner and another night in the valley.

DAY 04
Shibam and the Villages Above the Valley
Begin with Shibam, whose closely grouped mud-brick towers form one of Hadhramaut’s most distinctive historic skylines. Continue towards Wadi Doan, stopping at Al-Hajjrain and Sif before reaching Haid Al-Jizil, a settlement dramatically positioned above the valley. Check in at Haid Al-Jizil Hotel, then continue to Buqshan village to see its colourful palaces. Their decorated exteriors offer a different expression of regional architecture from Shibam’s concentrated vertical streets. Return to the hotel for dinner, with the escarpments and valley settlements providing the setting for the night.

DAY 05
A Full Day in Wadi Doan
Follow the right branch of Wadi Doan to Ribadh, visiting its market when operating on Sunday and the house associated with Osama bin Laden’s father. Walk towards Qarht Bahumaish before returning through the valley, stopping for photographs at Musaina’a Castle village, the Rehab viewpoints and Qarn Majed. These changes of perspective reveal how settlements occupy the edges of the cultivated valley. Return to Haid Al-Jizil Hotel for lunch. Later, visit nearby Hawfah village, then return in time for the changing evening light above Wadi Doan.

DAY 06
The Evening Light on Shibam
Leave Wadi Doan and drive back towards Seiyun, pausing in villages along the way for photographs and a final look at the valley architecture. The route continues by Shibam before reaching Hawta, where you check back into Hawta Palace Hotel and have time to rest. Later in the afternoon, return to Shibam to photograph its skyline near sunset. Seeing the town again at a different hour gives the towers a fresh character and provides a fitting final architectural impression before returning to the hotel for dinner.

DAY 07
From Hadhramaut to Historic Cairo
Transfer to Seiyun airport for the flight back to Cairo. Meet the local representative and continue to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, whose collections place objects from different periods within a wider account of Egypt’s history. After lunch, walk through the lanes of Khan el-Khalili and continue along El Muizz Street, known for its concentration of historic Islamic buildings. The contrast with Hadhramaut is striking, yet markets and architectural detail remain central to the day. Transfer to your Cairo hotel for the final overnight stay.
OVERNIGHT · Cairo
DAY 08
Departure from Cairo
Transfer to Cairo airport in the early morning for your onward flight. The arranged journey ends here, after two contrasting settings: the monumental and commercial streets of Cairo and the earthen towns of Hadhramaut. There is no additional sightseeing scheduled today, allowing the departure transfer to follow the confirmed flight arrangements. Keep your travel documents and essential belongings close at hand while the team assists with the transfer. Any extra hotel time or independent extension can be arranged separately rather than being presented as part of this programme.

Higher viewpoints can feel brisk in the early morning, so carry a light jacket alongside sun protection. October and March remain possible but are hotter, often reaching the mid-30s.
