A private, personally arranged journey through history, living cultures and remarkable landscapes.
THE JOURNEY
Travel deeper. Meet the place.
Three islands reveal three different ways of belonging to the Indian Ocean. Madagascar begins the story with sacred highland history and rainforest life found nowhere else. Réunion changes the scale, rising through waterfalls, Creole villages and extraordinary volcanic country. Mauritius completes the journey with migration heritage, local food and conservation work that tells a richer story than the familiar beach image.
This private Midasia Routes journey gives each island time to speak for itself. Specialist naturalists interpret Madagascar’s forests; local cultural guides bring context to royal places, mountain settlements and the history of indentured labour. UNESCO World Heritage visits connect landscape and memory, while markets, crafts and regional meals keep the experience grounded in daily life. Encounters are arranged respectfully around the people involved, with no assumption that private ceremonies or homes are open to visitors.
Your team manages airport welcomes, private transport, scheduled regional flights, meals, entrance arrangements and local guiding throughout the programme. Accommodation combines comfortable city stays with a carefully selected forest lodge; standards and facilities naturally differ between locations. Forest trails and mountain roads require realistic pacing, so routes are adjusted to your mobility, weather and official access. There are no scheduled beach-relaxation days. Instead, the journey offers a purposeful, varied passage through nature, history and the living cultures that make these islands so distinctive.
From your airport meeting point, Midasia Routes coordinates luggage assistance, private transfers and your local guiding team. Vehicles suit the route: comfortable air-conditioned cars or MPVs in cities, and appropriate four-wheel-drive vehicles, boats or charter aircraft where the itinerary requires them.
Illustrative branded vehicle; actual models and regional transport are confirmed before travel.

Your accommodation example · Mantadia Lodge · Forest-view bungalow
The Double Bungalow has a queen-size bed, a private terrace with a panoramic outlook, an ensuite shower and reversible air conditioning. It is an accommodation example for the Andasibe stay; the final bungalow, bedding and access arrangements are agreed before booking. Properties in Réunion and Mauritius are selected separately to suit those parts of the journey.
We select the best suitable accommodation along the route, with room category, bedding and access requirements agreed before booking. Remote lodges and heritage stays may offer simpler facilities than city hotels. We describe these differences clearly before you reserve.
Every practical detail coordinated
Visa arrangements, airport support, scheduled meals, sightseeing, transport and local guiding are coordinated as one journey. Historic sites, local visits and wildlife excursions follow opening hours, weather conditions and host availability; wildlife sightings and private ceremonies cannot be guaranteed.

DAY 01
The Red Island Welcomes You
Your Midasia Routes representative meets you on arrival in Antananarivo, assists with the airport formalities within permitted access, and introduces your private guide and driver. The road into Madagascar’s highland capital offers a first impression of rice fields, red-earth buildings and steep neighbourhoods climbing the hills. Settle into your hotel before an unhurried introduction to the city, timed around your international flight. If daylight permits, take a short guided walk through an accessible historic quarter, where your guide introduces the island’s Malagasy identity and its connections across the Indian Ocean. This is an orientation rather than a demanding sightseeing day. Over dinner, discuss the journey ahead: sacred royal places, rainforest wildlife and the very different island societies of Réunion and Mauritius. All onward arrangements are managed by your local team.
OVERNIGHT · Antananarivo
DAY 02
A Royal Hill and a Living Heritage
Travel north to the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Madagascar’s most significant sacred places. Explore the royal enclosure with your guide, hearing how kingship, ancestry and highland identity remain connected in Malagasy life. The wooden royal buildings, defensive gateways and surrounding landscape provide a thoughtful introduction to the Merina kingdom. Allow time for the site’s uneven paths and steps, with pauses rather than a hurried circuit. After lunch, return towards Antananarivo for a locally arranged craft visit, focusing on the skills and materials available that day. A conversation with a maker gives a different perspective from a souvenir stop. Back in the city, your guide brings together the island’s royal history, colonial period and modern independence before dinner at your hotel or a selected local restaurant.
OVERNIGHT · Antananarivo
Ambohimanga
DAY 03
From Highland Rice Fields to Rainforest
Leave Antananarivo after breakfast and travel east by private vehicle towards Andasibe. Allow much of the day for the road journey: traffic and road conditions can make this a five- to seven-hour transfer, including stops. The changing landscape is part of the experience, with rice-growing valleys giving way to greener hills and forest country. Pause for lunch and suitable village or market encounters, arranged with local consent rather than staged performances. Reach your forest lodge in time to settle in and meet the naturalist who will accompany your walks. As evening approaches, make a gentle introduction to the surroundings. When conditions allow, join a short guided night walk on a permitted community-managed trail to search for chameleons, insects and nocturnal wildlife. Your guide explains how to observe animals quietly, without touching or feeding them.
OVERNIGHT · Andasibe
DAY 04
Following the Call of the Indri
Enter the Analamazaotra forest area with a specialist local naturalist, listening for the far-carrying calls of the indri. Your walk follows wildlife activity rather than a fixed checklist, allowing time to watch the canopy, notice smaller creatures and understand the forest’s extraordinary diversity. The route is normally a moderate two- to four-hour walk on roots, slopes and sometimes muddy ground; a shorter route can be selected to suit your pace. Return for lunch, then continue with a less strenuous exploration of the Andasibe area. Your guide introduces the relationship between nearby communities, protected forests and nature-based employment. There is time to discuss conservation challenges as well as the animals themselves. Dinner is served at the lodge, with the possibility of a further short evening wildlife walk if weather and local access make it worthwhile.
OVERNIGHT · Andasibe
Indri
DAY 05
The Forest at a Different Scale
Today offers a second, distinct rainforest experience with your naturalist. In suitable conditions, travel to Mantadia for a longer walk through its richer primary forest landscape. Access roads can be rough, and the day is planned with an appropriate vehicle and realistic timing. Trails are more demanding than those around Analamazaotra; expect uneven ground and moderate walking, with the final route chosen around your ability. Look for lemurs, forest birds and the small details that make Madagascar remarkable, from unusual insects to intricate plant forms. A packed or lodge-prepared lunch keeps the day flexible. If weather or road conditions prevent Mantadia access, your guide uses an accessible community reserve instead. Return to the lodge with time to compare the different forest habitats, supported by photographs, field observations and conversation with the people who know them best.
OVERNIGHT · Andasibe
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
DAY 06
Markets, Makers and the Highland Capital
After breakfast, return west to Antananarivo by private vehicle. Keep the day spacious enough for the road rather than attaching a long list of visits to an already substantial transfer. Break for lunch and, where practical, a brief stop with local traders or artisans. Your guide helps interpret everyday details: produce carried to market, farming patterns and the architectural changes between countryside and city. On arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a short city visit if traffic and daylight allow. This overnight in the capital also places you close enough for the following day’s regional flight, avoiding a same-day drive from Andasibe before flying. Your team reconfirms luggage arrangements and flight timing while you enjoy a final Malagasy dinner. The journey now turns from Madagascar’s ancient living landscapes towards the volcanic heights and Creole culture of Réunion.
OVERNIGHT · Antananarivo
DAY 07
Across the Ocean to Creole Réunion
Transfer to the airport for your included regional flight from Antananarivo to Réunion. The exact departure is selected when travel dates are fixed; this itinerary uses an established airline network without assuming a daily flight at a particular hour. Your Réunion guide and driver welcome you at Roland Garros Airport and escort you to your hotel in Saint-Denis. According to arrival time, discover the capital’s seafront setting and streets of Creole architecture. The island’s history reflects African, Malagasy, European and Asian connections, which your guide introduces through buildings, food and everyday life. There is no beach afternoon: the emphasis is on orientation and cultural context, with comfortable time to settle after the flight. Dinner introduces Réunion’s cooking, and your guide explains the mountain and volcanic landscapes you will explore over the coming days.
OVERNIGHT · Saint-Denis, Réunion
Saint-Denis, Réunion
DAY 08
Waterfalls and the Creole Houses of Hell-Bourg
Drive into the lush Cirque de Salazie, where steep green walls, waterfalls and cultivated valleys reveal a different Réunion from the coast. Stop at accessible viewpoints before continuing to Hell-Bourg, a village known for its Creole houses and gardens. Walk with your guide through its streets, exploring how mountain life, former thermal springs and local building traditions shaped the settlement. Include a heritage-house or garden visit according to opening hours, with lunch featuring regional cooking. The day also introduces the story of marronnage and the people who sought refuge in these difficult landscapes, treated with historical care rather than romantic invention. Short walks provide a closer look at the vegetation without requiring a strenuous mountain trek. Return to Saint-Denis in the afternoon, allowing sufficient time for the winding road and changing mountain weather.
OVERNIGHT · Saint-Denis, Réunion
Hell-BourgSalazie
DAY 09
Vanilla, Volcanic Shores and Island Kitchens
Travel down the eastern side of Réunion, following a route that links cultivation, settlement and volcanic geology. A prearranged vanilla visit explains the patient work behind this valuable crop and its place in the island’s agricultural history. Continue towards the dramatic southeast, where the Route des Laves crosses landscapes transformed by successive lava flows. Your guide chooses safe, legally accessible stops and explains why a volcanic island is never a finished landscape. Enjoy lunch with an introduction to Creole ingredients and cooking traditions. Where time permits, visit a settlement or craft stop along the route, keeping the emphasis on people as well as scenery. Finish in Saint-Pierre for a two-night stay, creating a practical southern base for the volcano excursion. Dinner provides another opportunity to discover the island through its food rather than through a resort programme.
OVERNIGHT · Saint-Pierre, Réunion
DAY 10
Into the High Country of the Volcano
Set out early for the highlands and the Route du Volcan, passing through changing vegetation towards the stark landscape of the Plaine des Sables. In clear conditions, continue to the Pas de Bellecombe viewpoint for a dramatic perspective on Piton de la Fournaise. Réunion’s UNESCO-listed volcanic landscapes are the focus, but a summit trek is not required to appreciate them. Your guide selects short, suitable walks and viewpoints according to weather, mobility and official access restrictions. A full crater hike is not included in the standard day. If volcanic activity or weather closes the road, visit the volcano interpretation centre and accessible highland scenery instead. Lunch is arranged around the day’s conditions, followed by a gradual return to Saint-Pierre. This is an active exploration day with flexibility built around a real, changing volcano.
OVERNIGHT · Saint-Pierre, Réunion
Piton de la Fournaise
DAY 11
Mauritius Beyond the Familiar Image
Transfer to Roland Garros Airport with enough time for the journey across Réunion and your included regional flight to Mauritius. On arrival, your Midasia Routes local team assists at the airport and escorts you by private vehicle to your accommodation. The island’s appeal on this journey lies in its layered society, migration stories and endemic wildlife, rather than scheduled beach relaxation. Depending on flight timing, enjoy a brief orientation to the surrounding district or a first conversation with your guide over tea. Hear how Indian, African, Chinese and European influences have shaped food, language and cultural life. Settle into a comfortable island base for four nights, avoiding unnecessary hotel changes. Dinner introduces this cultural mix through carefully selected local dishes, while your guide outlines the heritage sites and conservation landscapes planned for the next three days.
OVERNIGHT · Mauritius
DAY 12
Port Louis and the Stories of Arrival
Discover Port Louis with a guide who connects the capital’s buildings and markets to the people who made the island their home. Visit UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat, where the history of indentured labour gives essential context to modern Mauritius. Allow time for interpretation and reflection, rather than treating the site as a quick photo stop. Continue through the city’s market streets, exploring produce, spices and the everyday exchanges that reveal its cultural diversity. Lunch introduces Mauritian flavours in a selected local setting. In the afternoon, explore further heritage districts or a museum according to opening hours and your interests. Your guide draws out the distinctions between slavery, emancipation and indenture, avoiding simplified accounts. Return to your accommodation for dinner, with a much fuller understanding of an island too often presented only through its coastline.
OVERNIGHT · Mauritius
Aapravasi Ghat
DAY 13
Forest Conservation and a Maritime Town
Travel to the southeast for a guided conservation visit to Île aux Aigrettes, reached by a short boat crossing when conditions permit. This small protected island is an important setting for understanding restoration of native forest and the recovery of threatened species. Accompanied by an authorised guide, follow the established trail and learn how introduced species altered Mauritius’s ecology. Wildlife sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed. The walk generally takes around one and a half to two hours on uneven ground, with time for questions rather than a rushed circuit. After lunch, explore Mahébourg’s historic streets and waterfront context, linking the district to maritime trade and colonial rivalry. A museum visit can be included when open. Return to your accommodation after a day combining practical conservation, local life and history, with no beach-break block in the programme.
OVERNIGHT · Mauritius
Île aux Aigrettes
DAY 14
Le Morne, Mountain Forest and Shared Memory
Set out for the southwest, where dramatic scenery and difficult history meet. At the UNESCO-listed Le Morne Cultural Landscape, your guide explains the mountain’s association with resistance to slavery and the memory of those who sought refuge there. The standard visit concentrates on interpretation and accessible lower viewpoints; the demanding summit ascent is not part of this itinerary. Continue towards the Black River Gorges area for forest viewpoints and an appropriate short nature walk, looking for native vegetation and birdlife with local guidance. Lunch is arranged en route, with time for conversation about the island’s changing relationship with its natural environment. Scenic stops are selected around road conditions and cloud cover. Return for a farewell dinner that draws together the journey’s three distinct island identities: Malagasy, Réunionnais and Mauritian, connected by migration, resilience and the Indian Ocean.
OVERNIGHT · Mauritius
Black River Gorges National Park
DAY 15
A Thoughtful Farewell to the Indian Ocean
Enjoy breakfast before your private transfer to the airport, timed to your international departure. Your local representative assists with the practical arrangements within permitted airport access, bringing the journey to a smooth conclusion. If your flight leaves later in the day, the schedule can accommodate a short nearby cultural stop when practical, without risking the transfer or promising a full extra touring day. Room use after normal check-out is arranged only when included in your confirmed travel schedule. Over fifteen days you have followed a route through royal heritage, endemic rainforest wildlife, volcanic highlands, Creole communities and the history of migration. The experience has been designed as an exploration of island worlds rather than a beach holiday, with private guidance and carefully managed connections carrying you from Antananarivo to Mauritius.
