Your Journey, Day by Day

11 days.
A world of discovery.

Follow the journey from its personal welcome to the final farewell. Each day has its own character, with the route, visits and practical rhythm brought together below.

01

Kabul: Gardens, Markets and a Personal Welcome

Your Midasia guide welcomes you at Kabul airport and assists with the private transfer to the hotel. The opening day introduces the capital through the Kabul Citadel, Babur’s Gardens and local markets, arranged around your arrival time and permitted access. Meet the city through its handicrafts, textiles and daily life, with time for Afghan food and an introduction to the journey. Any informal kite-flying observation depends on what is locally appropriate and taking place. Your guide explains current visiting arrangements and photography etiquette before the journey continues into the highlands.

02

Across the Highlands to Bamiyan

Travel by road from Kabul towards Bamiyan, with the honey-farm visit included along the way. On arrival, explore the monumental niches of the Bamiyan Buddhas and the historic site of Shahr-e Gholghola, where the landscape carries traces of successive civilisations. Continue to Bamiyan Bazaar for local crafts and everyday commerce. The source program also includes visits connected with local homes and cave dwellings; these are arranged respectfully through the guide and hosts. Settle into Bamiyan for the first of two nights.

03

The Blue Lakes of Band-e-Amir

Drive from Bamiyan to Band-e-Amir National Park, where intensely blue lakes lie beneath pale cliffs and open highland skies. Explore the accessible viewpoints with your guide, including elevated perspectives across the lakes when conditions and permissions allow. Lunch is arranged in the park with a simple outdoor picnic setting, leaving time to appreciate the water and surrounding landscape. Walking is paced for the terrain and altitude. Return to Bamiyan for the night after the day’s lake excursion.

04

Zuhak and the Road Back to Kabul

Return by road towards Kabul, stopping at the red fortress landscape of Zuhak. The journey retraces the highland route through the Haji-Gak area, with photographic pauses where suitable. On reaching Kabul, continue with the city’s planned historic monuments, bazaars and viewpoints as timing and access permit. Your guide brings the highland chapter into the wider story of the capital before you return to the hotel. The next stage moves north by air to Mazar-i-Sharif.

05

Fly North to the Blue Shrine

Your guide accompanies the transfer to Kabul airport for the domestic flight to Mazar-i-Sharif. On arrival, continue to the hotel and begin exploring the celebrated Blue Mosque and Shrine of Hazrat Ali complex within the areas open to visitors. Azure tiles, calligraphy and the movement of pilgrims give this northern city a very different character from Kabul and Bamiyan. The visit follows local customs and permitted photography arrangements, with the guide explaining the place’s architectural and spiritual significance.

06

Balkh and the Northern Bazaars

Travel to Balkh for the old city, markets, traditional craftsmanship, citadel remains, historic walls and Haji Piadah. The day connects archaeological heritage with the life of the modern district. Return to Mazar-i-Sharif for its bazaar and any remaining planned visits around the shrine area. Time for tea and locally arranged conversation can be included when appropriate; any optional meeting mentioned in the source is subject to your wishes and the local team’s arrangements. Overnight again in Mazar-i-Sharif.

07

Return by Air to Kabul

Transfer to the airport for the return flight to Kabul. Your guide meets you on arrival and coordinates the next part of the capital’s program, selecting from the city visits already planned for this journey. The day’s pace follows the flight arrival rather than assuming a fixed sightseeing window. Return to the hotel with time to prepare for the following morning’s move west to Herat. Private transfers connect the day’s practical arrangements.

08

Herat: A New Chapter in the West

Fly from Kabul to Herat and meet the local team on arrival. Transfer to the hotel and take time to rest before an introduction to this historic city. Its streets, architecture and trading traditions offer a different perspective on Afghanistan’s cultural connections. The afternoon begins the Herat chapter at a measured pace, leaving the principal monuments for the full day that follows. Your guide coordinates visits with the operating arrangements and local access in place.

09

The Art and Architecture of Herat

Spend the day exploring Herat’s principal cultural sites: Qala-i-Ikhtiar-ud-Din, the Herat Citadel; the surviving minarets; the shrine of Khwaja Abdullah Ansari; and the tomb of Goharshad Begum. Continue to Museum ul-Jihad and the local markets, where the city’s contemporary life stands beside its historic monuments. The Jami, or Friday Mosque, completes the program with its remarkable tiled architecture. Your guide connects these places through the traditions of scholarship, craftsmanship and urban life that made Herat a major cultural centre.

10

Kabul: A Final Look and a Personal Farewell

Take the domestic flight back to Kabul and transfer with your guide. Use the remaining time for sites from the planned capital program that were not reached earlier, along with the local markets and handicraft shopping. The day provides room to complete the journey without adding another distant road excursion. Return to the hotel and prepare for departure, reflecting on the gardens of Kabul, Bamiyan’s cliffs, the lakes of Band-e-Amir and the tiled monuments of Mazar-i-Sharif and Herat.

11

Departure from Kabul

Your Midasia representative and guide coordinate the private transfer to Kabul airport and assist with luggage and check-in as locally permitted. The journey concludes after eleven days connecting four of Afghanistan’s principal cultural regions, with the same personal attention given to departure as to the original welcome.

Journey Planning

Travel with the season.

The journey combines Kabul–Bamiyan road travel with domestic flights linking Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif and Herat. The local team coordinates transfers and daily visits.

Site access, domestic operations and local requirements are checked for the actual departure. Your guide adapts the order of visits when necessary while keeping the route’s cultural focus.

The character of your journey

Expect a cultural expedition with private local support and the best suitable accommodation along the route. Standards vary between the capital, regional cities and the highlands.
