The Journey

The western valleys of Bhutan.

A deeply comfortable introduction to Bhutan, designed around longer stays in its western valleys rather than daily hotel changes. Meet artisans and monks, cross mountain passes, walk through rice fields, explore Punakha Dzong and spend two nights in the beautiful Phobjikha Valley before returning to Paro for Tiger’s Nest.

Midasia provides private guiding and vehicle throughout, airport care, thoughtful dining, handpicked premium accommodation and a pace adjusted to the travelers. Temple ceremonies, festivals and private encounters are arranged only when genuinely available and appropriate.

Your Journey, Day by Day

11 days.
A world of discovery.

Follow the journey from its personal welcome to the final farewell. Each day has its own character, with the route, visits and practical rhythm brought together below.

01

A Himalayan Welcome

Arrive at Paro on a flight whose final approach reveals forested ridges and traditional farmhouses. A Midasia representative and private Bhutanese guide welcome you after immigration and assist with luggage. Drive gently to Thimphu with a scenic stop beside the river. The remainder of the afternoon is free to settle, followed by a personal briefing and an elegant welcome dinner. Your guide discusses walking preferences, dietary needs and cultural etiquette so the journey can be adjusted from the beginning. Overnight in Thimphu.

02

The Capital at Human Scale

Explore Thimphu with a private guide, beginning at a viewpoint or memorial chorten as residents make their daily circumambulations. Continue to carefully selected cultural institutions—perhaps the textile museum, traditional arts school or folk heritage collection—according to opening schedules and personal interests. Meet artisans when a genuine appointment is available rather than staging an encounter. After lunch, visit the great Buddha overlooking the valley and browse quality Bhutanese craft outlets. The day combines national history with contemporary life and leaves time to enjoy the hotel. Overnight in Thimphu.

03

Across Dochula to the Warm Valley

Drive over Dochula Pass, where prayer flags and 108 chortens frame Himalayan views on clear mornings. Rather than rushing through, take a gentle ridge walk or pause for tea before descending into the warmer Punakha Valley. Visit Chimi Lhakhang by an easy walk through fields and village lanes, learning how fertility traditions and local humor coexist with deep devotion. Continue to the valley retreat and settle for three nights. Overnight in Punakha.

04

Rivers, Rice Fields and the Great Dzong

Begin with a village or riverside walk selected for the season, passing rice terraces, farmhouses and orchards. Visit Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, exploring courtyards and sacred halls accessible to visitors. Your guide explains the fortress-monastery’s political and religious role without interrupting monastic life. Cross a suspension bridge if comfortable and enjoy an unhurried lunch. The afternoon offers rest, spa time or a private archery introduction. Overnight in Punakha.

05

A Day Designed Around You

Remain in the Punakha Valley for a flexible day. Active guests may walk to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten through cultivated fields, while those preferring a gentler pace can enjoy a shorter village route, riverside picnic or wellness time. A farmhouse-style lunch or cooking experience may be arranged with dignity and fair local participation. If river conditions and guest interest align, a gentle rafting experience can replace the walk. Returning to the same room gives the day its sense of ease. Overnight in Punakha.

06

Into the Valley of the Cranes

Travel toward Phobjikha across forested passes and changing rural landscapes. Stops are made for photography, tea and short walks rather than continuous driving. Arrive in the broad glacial valley beneath Gangtey Monastery and settle for two nights. In season, learn about the black-necked cranes and the community conservation practices that protect their winter habitat; sightings are never guaranteed. A late-afternoon walk near the lodge introduces the valley’s silence and scale. Overnight in Phobjikha.

07

Gangtey Monastery and the Nature Trail

Visit Gangtey Monastery when open and observe the relationship between the monastic complex and surrounding villages. Continue along the Gangtey Nature Trail, an easy-to-moderate walk through forest, meadow and farm country with expansive valley views. The pace is private, allowing photography and rest whenever desired. Lunch is arranged in the valley, followed by a visit to the crane information center in season or a cultural encounter with local residents. Return before dusk for tea and a quiet evening. Overnight in Phobjikha.

08

Return West Through the Passes

Drive back toward Paro, breaking the journey at viewpoints and villages. Lunch is arranged en route and the guide varies the stops from the outward journey. Continue past Thimphu and along the Pa Chhu to Paro, where traditional architecture spreads across a broad agricultural valley. Settle for three nights, allowing the final chapter to unfold without repeated packing. A gentle orientation walk can be added if energy permits. Overnight in Paro.

09

Fortresses, Farmhouses and Living Craft

Explore Paro Dzong and the national museum, subject to opening schedules, then walk a section of the traditional bridge and riverside path. Continue into the countryside for a farmhouse visit or seasonal agricultural encounter arranged respectfully with local hosts. Try archery or learn about Bhutanese cooking, textiles or incense according to personal interest. The afternoon remains measured because tomorrow’s Tiger’s Nest hike deserves fresh legs. Your guide reviews the trail, steps and available support. Overnight in Paro.

10

Tiger’s Nest, at Your Own Pace

Begin early for the hike to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, set dramatically above the Paro Valley. The standard return walk usually takes five to seven hours including monastery time, with sustained ascent, steps and altitude; horses may sometimes assist only on part of the ascent and are subject to local conditions. Your private guide establishes a steady pace and carries water and essentials. Guests may turn at the cafeteria viewpoint if that is the wiser personal goal. Celebrate with a farewell dinner and, when appropriate, a blessing or butter-lamp offering. Overnight in Paro.

11

A Graceful Departure

After breakfast, a Midasia representative and guide assist with luggage and accompany the private transfer to Paro airport. Departure formalities are supported as locally permitted. Leave Bhutan with memories of prayer flags at Dochula, river light on Punakha Dzong, quiet paths through Phobjikha and the profound sight of Tiger’s Nest—experienced privately and never hurried.
