The Journey

Upper Mustang in private.

Travel through the Kali Gandaki corridor into the former Kingdom of Lo, where wind-carved cliffs, cave complexes, walled settlements and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries create one of Asia’s most distinctive cultural landscapes. This is a privately managed road-and-walking expedition, not a conventional resort holiday.

Midasia arranges special permits, experienced local leadership, private four-wheel-drive transport, domestic flights where scheduled, best-suitable accommodation and flexible walks. Jomsom aviation, mountain roads, altitude and local access remain subject to real operating conditions; contingency is part of the design.

Your Journey, Day by Day

14 days.
A world of discovery.

Follow the journey from its personal welcome to the final farewell. Each day has its own character, with the route, visits and practical rhythm brought together below.

01

Arrive with Midasia Care

Receive a personal airport welcome, luggage assistance and private transfer to the hotel. After time to rest, meet the expedition guide for a detailed introduction to Mustang’s restricted-area permits, road realities, altitude and cultural etiquette. Documents are checked and luggage is reorganized for domestic flights and four-wheel-drive travel. A welcome dinner introduces the culinary traditions of Nepal while the guide explains why flexibility is essential in a landscape shaped by wind, weather and changing roads. Overnight in Kathmandu.

02

The Valley Before the Plateau

Explore Boudhanath and Patan with a private guide, linking Kathmandu’s living Buddhist and Newar traditions to the Tibetan cultural world ahead. Visit an artisan workshop when access is available and enjoy lunch in a characterful setting. The afternoon is reserved for the final permit and equipment check. Warm layers, sun protection, hydration and dust management matter more than expedition theatrics. Main luggage is edited carefully so vehicle and flight handling remain smooth. Overnight in Kathmandu.

03

Fly to the Annapurna Gateway

Fly to Pokhara, subject to operations, and transfer privately to a refined retreat. Enjoy a gentle lakeside orientation and a private boat outing if conditions are suitable. The afternoon remains relaxed before entering the Kali Gandaki corridor. Your guide reviews the Jomsom flight plan and the road alternative, explaining how morning winds affect aviation. This careful pause also allows the body to transition gradually before higher elevations. Overnight in Pokhara.

04

Across the Himalaya to Kagbeni

Take the early flight to Jomsom when weather permits; otherwise the local team activates the appropriate road plan. Meet the four-wheel-drive crew and continue through the stark Kali Gandaki valley to Kagbeni, the historic gateway to Upper Mustang. Walk through mud-brick lanes, chortens and the monastery precinct with respectful guidance. The afternoon is deliberately unhurried for acclimatization and permit formalities. Roads can be rough and dusty despite the private vehicle. Overnight in Kagbeni.

05

Enter the Restricted Kingdom

Pass the restricted-area checkpoint and drive north through changing bands of ochre, grey and red rock. Strategic walks replace hours of continuous driving: follow a village path, cross a ridge or approach a monastery on foot while the vehicle carries luggage. Pause at settlements such as Chele or Samar according to current road and accommodation conditions. Continue toward the Ghami area, where long mani walls and cultivated fields soften the desert landscape. Overnight in the Ghami area.

06

The Road to the Walled Capital

Continue across high passes and wind-carved valleys toward Lo Manthang. Stop at viewpoints and chortens, taking short acclimatized walks rather than treating the day as a transfer. Approaching the former royal capital across the plateau is a defining moment: whitewashed houses and monastery walls appear against immense barren ridges. Enter on foot where practical and settle for a three-night stay, avoiding the rushed one-night treatment common in compressed programs. Overnight in Lo Manthang.

07

Monasteries, Murals and the Old City

Explore Lo Manthang slowly with a knowledgeable local guide. Visit principal monasteries when open, observing conservation rules around ancient murals, photography and ritual space. Walk through narrow lanes, courtyards and the areas associated with the former royal household, without promising private access that may not be available. Meet a local artisan or community representative when arrangements can be confirmed. Lunch and rest divide the day, helping guests adapt to the altitude. Overnight in Lo Manthang.

08

Caves and Villages of the Northern Plateau

Travel by private four-wheel drive toward the northern villages near the Tibetan frontier, with the exact choice governed by permits, road conditions and local guidance. Explore cave settlements, monasteries and eroded cliffs, adding a moderate walk suited to guest energy and wind. The guide explains how trade, herding and Buddhism sustained communities in this severe environment. Return to Lo Manthang rather than changing accommodation, preserving comfort and allowing a second evening within the walled capital. Overnight in Lo Manthang.

09

South Through the Kingdom of Lo

Leave Lo Manthang after breakfast and travel toward Tsarang, pausing at ridge viewpoints and village shrines. Explore the settlement’s monastery and historic structures where access is permitted. A guided walk through fields and lanes reveals the practical systems of water, agriculture and communal life that make habitation possible. The day is shorter by design, allowing time to absorb the cultural landscape instead of simply covering distance. Overnight in the Tsarang area.

10

Return Along the Kali Gandaki

Continue south through the restricted zone, using the most reliable current road while adding short walks at selected villages. Complete permit formalities near Kagbeni and follow the broad Kali Gandaki toward Jomsom. Dust, wind and rough surfaces are inherent, so the driver schedules comfort stops and refreshments remain available. Arrive with time to rest and prepare for the early flight. Overnight in Jomsom.

11

Back to Lakeside Comfort

Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara when weather allows. Because strong winds often build later in the morning, operations begin early and delays remain possible. On arrival, transfer to the retreat for a hot shower and relaxed lunch. The afternoon is free for a spa treatment, lakeside walk or quiet rest. If aviation cannot operate, the road contingency is managed privately and the following program is adjusted. Overnight in Pokhara.

12

A Day Between Mountains and Lake

Enjoy a deliberately gentle day after Mustang. Visit a regional or mountain museum with your guide, take a private boat on Phewa Lake when conditions are favorable, and enjoy lunch with views toward the foothills. Guests wanting more activity can add a ridge walk; those needing recovery can remain at the retreat. This day is not filler—it protects the expedition from weather disruption and gives the body time to settle after altitude and rough roads. Overnight in Pokhara.

13

Return to the Kathmandu Valley

Fly to Kathmandu and transfer privately to the hotel. The afternoon can be tailored for specialist craft shopping, a museum, spa time or a final heritage walk. A farewell dinner celebrates Mustang through stories of walled towns, cliff caves, prayer walls and the people who sustain life on the plateau. Domestic-flight schedules remain subject to operation, and a private road transfer is held as the practical alternative when required. Overnight in Kathmandu.

14

Until the Mountains Call Again

Breakfast is served at the hotel. At the appropriate time, a Midasia representative assists with luggage and accompanies the private airport transfer. Departure assistance is provided as locally permitted. Leave Nepal with an understanding of Mustang that goes beyond dramatic scenery: a living Himalayan culture experienced patiently, responsibly and with the reassurance of continuous local care.
