This deliberate plateau journey avoids the false promise of effortless luxury at altitude. Begin with a protected gateway night, acclimatize slowly in Lhasa, cross the high landscape to Gyantse and Shigatse, and return with time for living pilgrimage, monasteries and local culture rather than constant driving.
Advance Tibet permits and authorized guiding are mandatory. Final flights, access and route permissions are reconfirmed for the travel dates. Midasia provides the best suitable vehicle and accommodation, oxygen and medical planning where appropriate, luggage care and a pace governed by health rather than ambition.

Your Journey, Day by Day
12 days. A world of discovery.
Follow the journey from its personal welcome to the final farewell. Each day has its own character, with the route, visits and practical rhythm brought together below.
01
A Protected Gateway Arrival
Arrive in Chengdu, where a Midasia representative welcomes you and assists with the private transfer. The first night protects the Lhasa flight from a risky same-day international connection. Meet the coordinating representative, review permits and baggage, and keep dinner light. The guide explains the altitude transition and the importance of honest symptom reporting. Overnight in Chengdu.
02
Fly to the Roof of the World
Fly to Lhasa on the confirmed service and meet the authorized Tibetan guide. Transfer slowly to the hotel and avoid formal sightseeing. Hydration, rest and a light meal take priority at approximately 3,650 meters. The guide reviews health, oxygen arrangements and the next day’s gentle program. Overnight in Lhasa.
03
A Gentle First Day on the Plateau
Begin late with a low-intensity visit such as Norbulingka gardens or a quiet neighborhood walk. Avoid strenuous stairways and return to the hotel whenever needed. The guide introduces Tibet’s geography, Buddhist traditions and contemporary context without overwhelming the acclimatization day. Overnight in Lhasa.
04
Potala Palace and the Jokhang
Visit the Potala at the assigned entry time, climbing gradually and pausing often. After lunch and rest, continue to Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrimage circuit. Security checks, photography rules and visitor access are respected. The day is carefully divided to balance one of Asia’s greatest cultural experiences with altitude awareness. Overnight in Lhasa.
05
Monastic Learning and Debate
Explore Drepung and Sera, or another confirmed combination, with the private guide. Learn how monastic colleges function and observe debate only if it occurs during the visit; it is not staged or guaranteed. A short kora walk may be included for guests adapting well. Return for an early evening. Overnight in Lhasa.
06
Across the Plateau to Yamdrok Lake
Leave Lhasa by private vehicle and climb toward the turquoise sweep of Yamdrok Lake. Stop at viewpoints only as conditions and local rules allow, then continue through high valleys toward Gyantse. Visit Pelkor Chode and the Kumbum when access and arrival time permit. The road day is long but broken by meaningful stops and a warm lunch. Overnight in Gyantse.
07
Fortress Towns and Tashilhunpo
Continue to Shigatse through agricultural valleys and villages. After settling in, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, and walk a section of its pilgrimage circuit if energy allows. The guide explains the monastery’s art, chapels and present religious life. Overnight in Shigatse.
08
A Full Day in Tibet’s Second City
Remain in Shigatse for a second night rather than racing onward. Explore the market, old town and selected cultural sites, with time for a local lunch and conversation. A village or rural excursion may be substituted according to permits and road conditions. This slower day gives depth to the journey and continued altitude adaptation. Overnight in Shigatse.
09
Return Through the High Country
Return to Lhasa by the most suitable confirmed route, stopping at rural viewpoints and a local lunch location. The road reveals the scale of the plateau and the settlements sustained by barley, herding and trade. Settle back into the same Lhasa hotel for three nights, eliminating further packing. Overnight in Lhasa.
10
Pilgrims, Crafts and Personal Interests
Tailor the day around photography, Buddhist art, traditional medicine, crafts or a deeper walk through the old city. The guide selects sites that are genuinely accessible and avoids promising private rituals. Time is reserved for shopping from responsible workshops and for rest. Overnight in Lhasa.
11
Descend from the Plateau
Fly from Lhasa to Chengdu on the confirmed service. Transfer privately to the hotel and enjoy a relaxed final afternoon or a gentle city experience if arrival time permits. This gateway night protects the international departure from plateau aviation changes. A farewell dinner marks the completion of a journey paced around both reverence and health. Overnight in Chengdu.
12
A Personal Farewell
Breakfast is served before the private airport transfer. Midasia assists with luggage and departure formalities as locally permitted. The journey ends with memories of prayer circuits, monastery courtyards, turquoise lakes and the immense silence of the Tibetan Plateau.
